Xiaomi’s Redmi 9 lineup consists of three models including the Redmi 9, Redmi 9A and Redmi 9C. Earlier this month, the Redmi 9 arrived in India as Redmi 9 Prime. Yesterday, Xiaomi teased the launch of a new smartphone in the Redmi 9 series without revealing the name.

Now, both Redmi India and Manu Kumar Jain revealed on Twitter that the brand’s upcoming offering is the Redmi 9. The smartphone will be launched on August 27th at 12 noon. Xiaomi has put up a dedicated event page for the device, which indicate that it could a modified version of the Redmi 9C.

Xiaomi is promoting the Redmi 9 with #MoreRAMMoreFun hashtag suggesting that the Indian variant could come with more RAM and storage than the global version. The event page also confirms that the smartphone will feature Hyper Engine game technology, dual-rear square-shaped camera and the latest MIUI 12 out of the box.
The teased features are different compared to the Redmi 9C, hinting that the Redmi 9 could be totally a new smartphone. The upcoming offering will compete against Realme’s latest C-series devices including the Realme C11 (review), C12 (review) and C15 in the country.
Redmi 9C specifications and features
To recall, the global Redmi 9C offers a 6.53-inch HD+ display with a waterdrop notch. The device sports a square-shaped camera module housing three sensors comprising a 13MP main shooter, a 5MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP depth unit. On the front, there is a 5MP selfie snapper.
The Redmi 9C is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G35 chipset paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage expandable via a dedicated microSD card slot. The smartphone draws its power from a 5,000mAh battery unit and runs on Android 10 with MIUI 11 on the top.
