Xiaomi has launched its latest budget smartphone called the Redmi 9 in India. The phone is a tweaked version of the Redmi 9C that was launched earlier this year in Malaysia. The smartphone gets double the RAM and storage in India compared to its Malaysian counterpart.

The Redmi 9 comes with 6.53-inch screen, Helio G35, 13MP AI dual cameras, and 5,000mAh battery as its key highlights. The Redmi 9 price in India has been set at Rs 8,999 for the base variant and at this price point, it goes up against the Realme C15 and Moto G8 Power Lite (review). Let’s find out which of these three offer better value for money.

The Redmi 9 is being offered in two configurations in India – 4GB + 64GB and 4GB + 128GB. These variants are priced at Rs 8,999 and Rs 9,999, respectively. The smartphone can be picked from Amazon, mi.com, Mi Studio and offline retail partners starting August 31st. It will be available in Sporty Orange, Sky Blue and Carbon Black colours.

Coming to the Realme C15, it’s also being offered in two variants – 3GB + 32GB priced at Rs 9,999 and 4GB + 64GB retailing at Rs 10,999. Realme is offering the handset in Power Blue and Power Silver colours. It can be brought from Flipkart and Realme India’s website.

Lastly, the Motorola Moto G8 Power Lite comes in a single 4GB + 64GB variant and was launched with a price tag of Rs 8,999, but is currently listed for Rs 9,999 on Flipkart. The smartphone is offered in Royal Blue and Arctic Blue colours.

The Redmi 9 ships with a 6.53-inch LCD display with a waterdrop notch on top. The screen offers 1,600 x 720 pixels resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The Realme C15 comes with a 6.5-inch screen, with the same resolution and aspect ratio. The Moto G8 Power Lite’s display is also a 6.5-inch unit with HD+ resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio.

However, while Redmi and Moto offerings come with a screen-to-body ratio in the range of 82 percent, the Realme C15 has an impressive 88.7 percent screen-to-body ratio. This means the bezels on Realme C15 are slimmer in comparison.

Coming to the core specs, the Redmi 9 and Realme C15 should be on par with each other in terms of performance. Both smartphones are powered by the entry-level gaming processor from MediaTek, Helio G35. The Moto G8 Power Lite is fitted with the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC, which is now a couple of years old. However, the Helio P35 performs almost the same as Helio G35 according to several benchmark tests online.

This boils down to the configurations of each handset in this round. The Redmi 9 offers two variants with 4GB RAM, with 64GB or 128GB storage, depending on the model. The Realme C15, on the other hand, offers the base model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and a 4GB + 64GB model. Lastly, the Moto G8 Power Lite offers a single 4GB + 64GB. The Redmi 9 wins this round for offering two variants, both with 4GB RAM.

In terms of software, all three smartphones boot Android 10 with Realme UI on top for the C15, MIUI 12 for the Redmi 9 and stock Android interface for the Moto G8 Power Lite.

The Redmi 9, Moto G8 Power Lite, and Realme C15 are equipped with dual, triple and quad rear camera setup, respectively. The Redmi 9 comes with a 13MP primary sensor accompanied by a 2MP depth unit. The Moto G8 Power Lite has a higher-resolution 16-megapixel primary sensor accompanied by a 2MP macro lens and 2MP depth sensor. The Realme C15 is fitted with a 13MP primary camera backed by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, 2MP depth sensor and 2MP macro lens.

Coming to the front cameras, the Realme C15 and Moto G8 Power Lite offer an 8MP snapper, whereas the Redmi 9 has 5MP unit.

The Realme C15 is an ideal option for someone who’s looking for an affordable smartphone with an immersive display, good cameras and a beefy battery. However, if you have a hard cap on your budget, the Redmi 9 should be your pick as it offers the same processor and battery capacity. The Moto G8 Power Lite on the other hand is a great pick for those who prefer a stock Android experience.
