Redmi S2 with 16-megapixel Selfie Camera & Bezel-less Display Launched

Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi introduced a new phone and a series under its Redmi branding today. The new phone is termed as the Redmi S2 and it was launched in China today. The major highlight of the smartphone is its superior selfie camera. The S in its name probably stands for ‘Selfie’. Xiaomi claims that this is the ‘best Redmi selfie phone’ ever.

The Redmi S2 conforms to the bezel-less trend and rocks a 5.99-inch display with a HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The phone bears some resemblance to the Redmi Note 5 Pro in terms of design. A major visual difference is the dual antenna lines which seem like a fresh take by Xiaomi. It is available in three different colours: Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver and Rose Gold.

Coming to the phone’s main highlight, its cameras or rather the front camera. There is a 16-megapixel sensor on the front that is capable of taking impressive selfies. It uses 2-micron pixels that combines four small pixels into a large one. It also offers AI portrait more and AI smart beauty mode to make your selfies look more beautiful. The front camera also has face unlocking ability which lets you unlock your smartphone via your face. On the rear, there is a dual-rear camera setup that combines a 12-megapixel sensor with a 5-megapixel one.

Talking about its performance, the phone packs in Xiaomi’s favourite (same processor used in Mi A1, Redmi Note 5 and Note 4) Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset. The phone is available in two variants, 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM. Even in terms of storage, it is available in 32GB and 64GB variants. You can also expand the phone’s storage up to 256GB via a microSD card slot. The Redmi S2 runs on MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat. There is a 3080mAh battery that powers this phone and it has all the basic connectivity options including 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a micro USB port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 is priced at at CNY 999 (~ Rs. 10,600) for the 3GB RAM variant. The 4GB RAM model costs CNY 1,299 (~Rs. 13,700). The device goes on sale on May 17 and it will be available on
