Redmi Y2 Likely to Debut in India on June 7, Could be Rebranded Edition of Redmi S2

Xiaomi had launched the selfie-centric Redmi S2 smartphone in the previous week in China. Leaked information that had surfaced before the launch of the phone had revealed that the smartphone would be also heading to India. The Chinese manufacturer has confirmed through its social media channels that it will be launching a new Redmi smartphone on June 7 through a launch event in New Delhi. It is speculated that the handset may not debut as Redmi S2, but may launch as Redmi Y2.

In the below teaser, the upcoming Redmi phone can be seen with a front-facing flash which suggests that it is a selfie-focused handset. On Twitter, the company has used hashtags like #FindYourSelfie and #RealYou hashtags. for teasing the upcoming Redmi phone. The alphabet “Y” has been highlighted in the aforementioned hashtags which indicates that it could be arriving as a successor for the Redmi Y1 phone that was launched last year in November.

In the previous month, a leakster had also claimed that Xiaomi Mi A2 and Redmi Y2 are the two upcoming phones for India. The Redmi Y2 phone is likely to borrow its entire specs from Redmi S2. Before the launching the Redmi S2 phone in China, the company had claimed that it will be the best Redmi selfie phone from the company. Hence, the rumored Redmi Y2 is expected to feature the same LED flash equipped selfie camera of 16-megapixel that is available on the Redmi S2. It offers AI features such as AI Portrait Mode, AI Beauty Mode and AI Face Unlock.

The Redmi S2 features a dual camera module that includes a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The dual rear cameras is equipped with features like AI Portrait Mode, Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and dual-tone LED flash. It is fueled by the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset.

The Redmi S2 has a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display that offers 18:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. Its other specs include rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, microSD card slot, 4G VoLTE, dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 and 3,080mAh battery. The handset comes preinstalled with Android 8.1 Oreo that is overlaid with MIUI 9 skin.



The 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB + 4 GB RAM variants of the Redmi S2 are respectively priced at 999 Yuan (~Rs. 10,649) and 1,299 Yuan (~Rs. 13,849) in China. It comes in three colors like Rose Gold, Champagne Gold and Platinum Silver. As of this writing, there is no information available on the pricing of Redmi Y2.
