At RIL’s 41st AGM on thursday, Reliance launched the JioPhone 2 with advanced features. The phone will be available from August 15 at an affordable price tag of Rs 2,999. Does this new device prove a worthy upgrade from the original JioPhone? Let’s find out.
The JioPhone 2 is an improved variant of JioPhone launched last year. The JioPhone 2 has a revamped design. It resembles the Blackberry Curve like design. The phone offers a full QWERTY Keypad. Due to this the display is now in landscape orientation but it still measures 2.4-inches. The JioPhone 2 bears the same internal specifications as its predecessor. It features 512MB RAM and offers 4GB internal memory which is expandable up to 128GB via SDcard support. On the camera front, the device has 2MP rear sensor and a VGA front snapper for selfies.
The JioPhone 2 is powered by a 2,000 mAh battery unit. Out of the box, it runs on Kai OS and will support popular applications like Whatsapp, Facebook and Youtube through the Jio app store. The apps will also be made available on the original JioPhone (2017) starting August 15. Whatsapp has currently 200 million active users in India and the popularity will likely increase now with the support for JioPhone. The phone has dual-SIM functionalities and is 4G VoLTE enabled. However it’s not clear whether the phone will support dual Jio SIM cards or if you could use a SIM from another carrier such as Airtel or Vodafone (this is highly unlikely, though).
The JioPhone 2 has a stellar pricing and seems like a good choice for first time users. The company also announced a Monsoon Hungama offer which allows users to exchange their old feature phone for a JioPhone for just Rs 501.The offer will be valid until July 21.
