Samsung denies plans for affordable foldable phones priced around $400

Samsung’s foldable phones carry a hefty price tag; for instance, at launch, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 were priced at $999 and $1,799, respectively. A tipster, who is known for leaking information about upcoming Samsung devices, recently claimed that the South Korean tech giant could be planning to launch a mid-range foldable phone in the $400 to $500 price range. However, a new report by a South Korean publication reveals that Samsung has refuted such a rumor.

A spokesperson from Samsung Electronics dismissed recent rumors on Tuesday, stating, “We have no intention of producing foldable smartphones in the midrange price segment, and the latest speculations are unfounded.”

The above-mentioned leak is not the only source that has claimed that Samsung is working on a mid-tier foldable phone. A Taiwanese market research company, TrendForce, claimed earlier this month that sources within the supply chain have revealed that Samsung plans to introduce foldable phones in the midrange market in 2024. This strategy will allow a wider range of customers to buy its foldable phones.

Other reports have claimed that Samsung’s affordable foldable phones may carry the “FE” branding, which means they may retain the design and core features like cameras from the current models but offer downgraded internals like chipsets, RAM, and so on. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in August 2024.

The Galaxy Z Flip / Fold FE models are rumored to launch a couple of months after the Z Flip 6 / Fold 6. Concerning the existence of the FE models, the same spokesperson said, “There’s nothing decided on the matter.” Launching a mid-range foldable phone would certainly allow Samsung to take on the likes of the Razr 2023 / Razr 40, which were introduced with a price tag of $699 in the US.
