Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) today i.e. 19th December. The phone was subjected to a lot of rumours and leaks before it became official. The major highlight of these phones is the Infinity display, similar to Galaxy S8 and Note 8. Apart from this, the phones also have dual selfie cameras. The A8 and A8+ will be available for purchase in early January 2018. Let’s take a look at the features and specifications of both these phones.
Design-wise they bear a modern and premium feel owing to the metal body. The phones come with an Infinity Display (Samsung’s version of bezel-less) with very thin bezels on the top and bottom. They are designed to be compatible with Samsung Gear VR headset. These are the first phones in the ‘Galaxy A’ series to come with this feature. The A8 and A8+ are available in four different colours: Black, Blue, Gold and Orchid Grey.
These devices come with Super AMOLED displays, just like most Samsung smartphones. The A8’s display measures 5.6-inch whereas that of the A8+ spans 6 inches. Both of them come with a Full HD+ resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels. For protection, these phones feature a curved glass on top.
The camera setup on the A8 and A8+ consist of two cameras on the front and a single camera on the back. The rear camera has a 16-megapixel sensor with an f/1.7 aperture. Whereas on the front, there’s a combination of 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors. This setup will help users capture portrait selfies with a bokeh effect, similar to what the Google Pixel 2 and iPhone X offer. Moreover, the cameras will aid in clicking sharp and crisp images owing to the high megapixel count.
In terms of performance, these phones come with an octa-core processor. The Galaxy A8 comes in only a 4GB RAM variant but the A8+ has two variants: 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM. On the storage front, the phones have 32GB and 64GB internal storage option. Alternatively, you can also use a microSD card to expand its storage up to 256GB. Both the phones run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat which is layered with Samsung’s own UI.
The phones come with all the connectivity options including 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS and NFC. To charge the phone, there’s an USB Type-C port provided. The A8 packs a 3000mAh battery unit whereas its plus variant comes with a 3500mAh battery.
