At its Unpacked event held today in San Francisco, South Korean giant Samsung has unveiled a slew of devices that include the flagship Galaxy S10 series and Galaxy Buds earbuds, among others. The company also launched its much-awaited foldable phone dubbed as the Galaxy Fold. The device was teased back in November 2018. Let’s take a look at the below:
Technical Specifications:
As the name suggests, the Galaxy Fold is half phone and half tablet. The device sports two AMOLED Infinity Flex displays which measure 4.58-inches when folded and 7.3-inches when unfolded. The former translates to 1,960 x 840 pixels resolution, while the later bears a resolution of 2,152 x 1,536 pixels. Samsung states that it uses a hinge system with multiple interlocking gears.
The Galaxy Fold sports a total of six cameras – three on the back, one on the cover, and two on the front. The triple camera module consists of a 16MP ultra wide-angle sensor, a 12MP wide-angle lens and 12MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom. The cover camera features a 10MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture. The dual front camera setup comprises of a 10MP f/2.2 selfie camera and and 8MP f/1.9 RGB depth sensor.
Under the hood, the device is equipped with a 7nm octa-core chipset coupled with 12GB RAM. It features 512GB of internal memory in the form of Universal Flash Storage 3.0 for faster speeds. On the software front, the foldable phone runs on the latest Android 9.0 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on the top. The Galaxy Fold features three-app multitasking which lets users run three apps at once The company claims that apps like WhatsApp, Microsoft Office, and Facebook have been optimised for folding display. The phone also offers app continuity, so that apps you’re viewing on the folded display adapt when the display is opened out.
The Galaxy Fold is backed by dual batteries with a combined capacity of 4,380mAh. The phone supports both fast and wireless charging. There is a fingerprint sensor placed on the side for unlocking the device.
Pricing & Availability:
Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Fold will retail at $1,980 (roughly Rs 1,40,619). It will be available from April 26th in the US markets. There will be both LTE and 5G variants of the Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy Fold will come in Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue colours with an engraved hinge.
