In February 2019, Samsung had announced the Galaxy Fold as its first smartphone with foldable display. After couple of hurdles related to design issues, the Galaxy Fold was made available in the market in September. Earlier this month, Samsung reported that it sold around 500,000 units of Galaxy Fold. The South Korean company has previously claimed that it aims to sell 6 million units of foldable phones in 2020. Hence, the company is likely to introduce a couple of foldable smartphones this year in a bid to achieve the set target. Next month, the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Flip clamshell phone with a foldable display. Fresh information reveals that the company may introduce the successor to the Galaxy Fold as early as in the second quarter of this year.
According to Max Weinbach from XDA Developers, who recently provided juicy leaks on the Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Z Flip, the true successor for the Galaxy Fold will be announced at some point in Q2. Based on the information that has surfaced on South Korean websites and Bloomberg, he has shared some key specifications of the device.
The alleged Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to come with a large-sized foldable screen of 8-inches. It will have an ultra-thin glass layer instead of the plastic layer that came with the original Galaxy Fold. Being a flagship breed, it will be fuelled by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. The chipset comes with the X55 5G modem. Hence, the device will be equipped with 5G support.
For photography, the purported Galaxy Fold 2 could be sporting a main camera of 108-megapixels. It is speculated that the device could be coming with an S-Pen. No other details on the specs of the Galaxy Fold 2 are known yet.
While we don’t know if it will sport a fold-out design like the original Galaxy Fold, a leaked poster showcasing a tri-folding design for the device had surfaced on Weibo last week. The image suggests that it could be equipped with dual hinges that lets the user fold it in a zigzag manner.
When completely folded, it could be used as a regular smartphone with a thicker form factor, as the three parts of the device stack into one. When unfolded, it can provide a tablet like screen space. The leak claimed that it is a Galaxy Z series device. There is no official information available on its existence.
