Through the Samsung Unpacked event that was held in New York, U.S., the South Korean company has unveiled the Galaxy Note 9 smartphone as a successor for the Galaxy Note 8 from last year. The same platform was used to unveil the Galaxy Watch and Samsung Galaxy Home smart speaker. The Galaxy Note 9 has arrived with beefed up specs, but its design is almost identical to its predecessor. Here is all the information on the newly announced Galaxy Note 9.
Design and Display
The Galaxy Note 9 looks like Galaxy Note 8 from the front as well as rear. What sets it apart from its predecessor is the slightly reduced side bezels and rearranged fingerprint scanner on the back panel. The Note 9 comes that features toughened Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and rear comes in colors like Ocean Blue, Lavender Purple, Metallic Copper and Midnight Black. Each color variant comes with slightly different colored S Pen. However, the Ocean Blue edition has a yellow S Pen. The phablet weighs 201 grams and measures 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8mm. It is an IP68 rated dustproof and waterproof smartphone.
The 6.4-inch S-AMOLED display of the Note 9 is 0.1-inch bigger than Note 8. The Infinity Display design of the Note 9 allows it to support QHD+ resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display is HDR 10 complaint and it is also enabled with Always on Display feature.
Performance and Variants
The Galaxy Note 9 is loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo that is customized with Samsung Experience UX. The Intelligent Scan features combined security of iris scanning and facial recognition. Depending on the region, the Galaxy Note 9 will either feature the Exynos 9810 chipset or Snapdragon 845 SoC. The phone is fueled by 4,000mAh battery. Sadly, it carries support for Quick Charge 2.0 apart from wireless charging. Samsung has installed a large water-cooling heat pipe inside the phablet to regulate its internal temperature.
The base model of the Note 9 features 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The highest configuration variant has 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The Note 9 also features a microSD card slot.
Cameras and Connectivity
The Galaxy Note 9 features dual camera with dual OIS. The primary wide-angle 12-megapixel camera has variable aperture between f/1.5 and f/2.4. It is assisted by 12-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture which offers 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. It is the very same dual camera setup that is available on the Galaxy S9+ that was unveiled earlier this year. With AI, the dual camera can automatically detect around 20 different scenes for better photography experience. For shooting selfies, it is equipped with autofocus enabled f/1.7 aperture 8-megapixel camera.
For connectivity, the Galaxy Note 9 its users with dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE through Cat. 18 LTE modem, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, enhanced 4×4 MIMO, NFC, GPS, USB-C and 3.5mm audio jack.
S Pen and Samsung DeX
The S Pen is the USP of the Galaxy Note 9. Since it is enabled with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the button present on it can be used as a remote control for accessing various functions on the phone from a distance of up to 30 feet. It can be used a camera shutter, playing or pausing a video, clicking next or previous while showing a presentation. The Screen Memo feature allows Note 9 users to take note on the display without waking it up.
Samsung DeX does not require usage of DeX docking station on the Note 9. The company provides a small dongle through the Note 9 can be connected to larger screen via HDMI for full-fledged desktop experience.
Pricing and Availability
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will be releasing in multiple markets on 24th August. However, it will be coming to India very soon since Samsung India has already started its pre-booking.
The 128 GB and 512 GB models of the Note 9 will be respectively available in India for Rs. 67,900 and Rs. 84,000. Customers who pre-book it will be able to avail the Galaxy Gear Sport smartwatch at a massively discounted price tag of Rs. 4,999. The smartwatch is currently selling for Rs. 22,990 in the country.
