Although Samsung launched the flagship Galaxy S20 smartphone a few weeks back, rumours of the next-gen Galaxy S and Note devices are already rife on the internet. According to initial reports, Samsung is working on the world’s first handset with an under-display selfie camera. The feature may not be available on the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series, but on the next S-series flagship phone that is expected to debut as the Galaxy S21 or S30.The moniker of the phone is not known yet. The information comes from popular gadget tipster Ice Universe, who claims Samsung is studying the feasibility of the project at the moment.
Samsung reportedly evaluating under-display selfie camera
Samsung is considering using the under-screen camera technology on the Galaxy S21 first, and is evaluating the feasibility of the technology.

Although OPPO and Xiaomi have already come up with working prototypes of the technology, the project is far from production-ready. The biggest hurdle is balancing the amount of light passing through the display panel and the pixel density on the area covering the camera sensor. While the pixel density on the panel needs to be high in order to offer a seamless experience, higher pixel density causes less light to pass through to the camera sensor underneath, resulting in darker images.
Possible issues with under-display selfie cameras
OPPO has worked around this problem by reducing the pixel count on the display area covering the camera sensor. However, a square-shaped camera outline is clearly visible on the prototype. The outline is more prominent when lighter colors like white and grey are displayed on the screen, causing major distractions. Experts believe Samsung has a higher chance of overcoming the problem as it makes some of the best OLED panels around the world.
Some of the other highlights of the Samsung Galaxy S21/S30 would be the next-generation Exynos processor and the Android 11-based One UI OS. For the moment though, we will have to wait for an official announcement from the brand before confirming any of these speculations listed above.
