Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 could finally offer this one missing feature

Highlights

  • Samsung is on course to add dust resistance to the upcoming duo of foldables, per a new rumour
  • The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5 are likely to be revealed by the end of July
  • Samsung’s Unpacked event will take place in South Korea for the first time this year

Samsung’s current crop of foldables, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Z Flip 4, offer a ton of features out of the box, including water resistance (IPX8). But the lineup has historically lacked dust resistance, which could be changing this year, as per a new rumour.

The South Korean electronics giant will include IP58 protection with the two new foldables, according to @chunvn8888. Dust resistance can be a challenge on foldables, given the existence of hinges. However, if this rumour is true, Samsung could be on course to rectify this one drawback in an otherwise stellar foldable lineup.

As 9to5Google rightly points out, Samsung will not be the first to include dust resistance on its foldable, with the IP52-certified Motorola Razr 40 and the Razr 40 Ultra being the first to do so. However, the new Razr lineup seems to have sacrificed water resistance to achieve a dust resistance rating, which isn’t a tradeoff that all customers are willing to make.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 launch date

Leaks over the past several months have told us what to expect from Samsung’s upcoming foldables. Among the more recent news we obtained is that the manufacturer will hold its foldable unveiling event in its native Seoul, South Korea, for the first time towards the end of July.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 rumoured specifications

Among the key changes to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a rumoured hinge design to significantly reduce the gap left over when the device is folded. Similarly, for the clamshell foldable, Samsung could make hinge improvements aimed at cutting down display creasing. The company will reportedly achieve this by using a teardrop-style hinge, as seen on the OPPO Find N2 Flip.

Samsung is finally set to embrace a larger cover screen for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, in line with recent foldables like the Vivo X Flip and the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. The book-type foldable, on the other hand, could keep the same 7.6-inch AMOLED primary display (unfolded) and a 6.2-inch cover screen from the predecessor.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5 will likely feature the Galaxy-branded version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (SM8550-AC) featured on the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year. Conflicting reports are available on the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s camera.

As per renowned leaker Yogesh Brar, the company may retain the same 50-megapixel primary shooter, 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 10MP telephoto camera. The clamshell foldable would also keep a dual-camera configuration from the Galaxy Z Fold 4 — a 12-megapixel primary unit and a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, Brar has previously revealed.
