Samsung is leading the market when it comes to foldable smartphones. After initial issues with Galaxy Fold, Samsung delivered three impressive devices in the form of Galaxy Z Flip, its 5G version and Galaxy Z Fold 2. The Korean company has even gone ahead to build ultra thin glass for its foldable smartphones.
One thing is clear that Samsung is learning fast about foldable smartphones and reiterating even faster. While the company is introducing new foldable phones, they have all come at a huge cost to entry. There have been rumours doing the round that Samsung is cognizant of the price and is working on making foldable smartphones more affordable.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip might get a lite version
One particular rumour claimed that the South Korean smartphone maker is working on a lighter version of the Galaxy Fold. It was said to be called Galaxy Z Fold Lite and would have been cheaper than Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, new information from Ross Young suggests Samsung has shelved that plan.
Young is the founder of DSCC and has been breaking rumours about foldable smartphones with a decent track record. Now, he claims to have not heard about the Galaxy Z Fold Lite in a while. This could be an indicator that Samsung has cancelled the plan. However, the interesting news here is that Samsung is still working on a more affordable foldable smartphone.
We don’t hear about Z Fold Lite anymore but we are hearing about Z Flip Lite with UTG…

Young says he is hearing that the company is working on a Galaxy Z Flip Lite. This smartphone is now said to be cheaper than the Galaxy Z Flip. The Lite model is said to use the same ultra thin glass we first saw on the original Galaxy Z Flip. It is not immediately apparent why Samsung moved from the Galaxy Z Fold to Galaxy Z Flip for its first lite model in the foldable series.
To recall, Samsung had launched the Galaxy Fold at $1,980 (Rs 164,999 in India) while the Galaxy Z Flip debuted at $1,380 (Rs 1,09,999). The difference in price indicates that Galaxy Z Flip is easier to build than the outward folding design of the Galaxy Z Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 2. Another reason could be the appreciation for the Galaxy Z Flip design.
The flip phones seem to be making a comeback in the smartphone market. The Galaxy Z Flip marries old school flip phone design with modern foldable display. If it makes a Galaxy Z Flip Lite and offers a competitive price then it could sell more than other foldable phones from the company.
