In February last year, Samsung introduced its first foldable smartphone called the Galaxy Fold. Today, the South Korean tech giant has unveiled its second foldable handset dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The handset was unveiled alongside the latest Galaxy S series phones – the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra at an event in San Francisco. Samsung’s first foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, offered a wide display which could be folded vertically. However, the Galaxy Z Flip features a clamshell design, which means the handset’s screen folds horizontally, just like the Moto razr.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip specifications and features
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip’s screen features a punch hole on top, just like the one found on the Galaxy S20 series. It is home to a single selfie camera. The phone has a 6.7-inch main screen on the inside with full HD+ resolution, HDR10+ support, and a cover made from “Ultra Thin Glass”. There’s a secondary Super AMOLED 1.1-inch display on the outside with a resolution of 300 x 112 pixels and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The secondary screen is always-on and can be used to show the time, weather updates, notifications, and more. The outer-side of the clamshell handset also features dual primary cameras.
Moving onto the other specs, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor under the hood. The chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Software-wise, the device boots Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top, which is customised to support the foldable nature of the phone. In the camera department, there’s a 12MP Dual Pixel main camera on the back with f/1.8 aperture, which is aided by a 12MP ultra-wide-angle secondary sensor. The rear camera module supports optical image stabilisation. For selfies, there’s a 10MP Dual Pixel AF camera with an aperture of f/2.4. The main cameras of the device are capable of supporting up to 8x digital zoom, as per the brand.
While the latest Samsung Galaxy S series flagships offer support for the next-gen 5G networks, the Galaxy Z Flip is a 4G-only device. The other connectivity features include dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, Mirrorlink, and A-GPS with GLONASS. For security, the company has provided a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the handset. Lastly, a 3,300mAh battery with 15W wired fast charging and 9W wireless charging completes the list of the specs.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip pricing and availability
As expected, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip carries a hefty price tag of $1,380 (~Rs 98,500). The phone comes in Mirror Black and Mirror Purple colour variants, and will go on sale starting February 14th in select markets.
