Samsung, the Korean brand known to make the most robust and aesthetic smart devices, has launched a new smartwatch and fitness tracker series dubbed as Gear Sport & Fit2 Pro respectively. Both devices were initially showcased in Berlin at the IFA Event held in September 2017. The Indian market for fitness trackers and wearables is beginning to boom and these products seem to be Samsung’s attempt to tap into this growing segment. Let’s have a look at what these devices offer and how they stand against other wearables currently available.
The Samsung Gear Sport Smartwatch
As the name suggests, this offering is a smartwatch and bears the ‘Sport’ prefix which means it will come along with some enhanced ruggedness. That being said, the smartwatch is indeed quite robust and is MIL-STD-810G certified, which in layman terms means it is certified to withstand military-grade conditions.
On the display front, the smartwatch rocks a 1.2-inch super AMOLED display having a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. The display is also layered with Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection against scratches and accidental drops. The watch comes in a stylish circular bezel and will be available in Black and Blue colour variants.
Underneath its skin, the watch is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz. The watch also packs in 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. On the software front, this offering runs Samsung’s proprietary Tizen OS. To keep the watch running through a day’s use, it is also equipped with a 300mAh battery module which can be charged wirelessly.
The watch also packs in quite a few sensors to gather health data which include a Heart Rate Monitor (HRM), an accelerometer for tracking steps, a gyro sensor, barometer, and an ambient light sensor. The smartwatch is compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones.
Some of the noteworthy features that come bundled with the watch include paying via Samsung Pay which uses its NFC chip. The smart wearable can also be used as a pointer for powerpoint presentations and the capability to remotely control Smart Hub devices such as air conditioners via the Samsung Connect feature.
The watch retails for an asking price of Rs. 22,990 which in all honesty seems quite pricey. In comparison, a few extra bucks can get you a more feature-packed Apple Watch Series 2 instead.
The Samsung Fit2 Pro
The Fit2 Pro is a fitness tracking band that debuted and launched alongside the Gear Sport. The fitness band is a premium wearable and bears a premium price tag as well. Similar to the Gear Sport, the Fit2 Pro is also military-grade certified and is expected to be super durable.
On the display side of things, the Fit2 Pro rocks a 1.5-inch super AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass 3 protection layered on it for extra protection. Speaking of extra protection, the MIL-STD-810G certification that the device bears allows it to withstand up to 5 atmospheres of pressure under water, which translates to about 50-feet of water resistance. So yes, you can definitely take the fitness tracker and the smartwatch for a swim.
Underneath its hood, the Fit2Pro is powered by a dual-core processor coupled with 512MB of RAM. The tracker is also equipped with a 200mAh battery pack that runs the show. Being a true fitness device, it also comes with some fitness based features like tracking swimming lap count, lap time, and stroke type. It also is capable of sensing when the user is running or brisk walking through its on board GPS chip.
The price of the Fit2 Pro starts at Rs. 13,590. With this price tag, Samsung has placed this device in the segment dominated by Fitbit.
