On: November 8, 2018

At the ongoing Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2018 in the US, Samsung has announced the new Infinity Flex Display that will be employed on its first foldable phone. The South Korean company did not reveal the launch date of its foldable phone, but it did share information on the key specs of the device.

Samsung Infinity Flex Display

The Infinity Flex Display of the foldable phone can fold vertically. Samsung calls the outer screen of the foldable phone the “cover display.” It measures 4.58-inches and offers an aspect ratio of 21:9. The screen density of the cover display 420 dpi and it offers a resolution of 840 x 1960.

The main display can be seen when the device is opened. It measures 7.3 inches and offers an aspect ratio of 4.2:3. The screen resolution offered by it is 1536 x 2152 pixels and its screen density is 420 dpi.

Apart from the configurations for the display, there is no information available on the other specs of the Samsung’s first foldable smartphone. The other thing that is known about the foldable phone is that it will be equipped with Samsung’s new One UI. It is revamped version of the Experience UI that offers a clutter-free simplistic design. All the necessary functions are available on the bottom portion of the UI to promote one hand use.

Samsung One UI

Samsung has built the One UI with software engineers from Google and Android developers. The apps that are opened on the cover display can automatically transition into the main display when the device is unfolded.

As shown above, Flipboard is working on a customised app for the upcoming foldable phone from Samsung. The images show that when the device is folded, the app will show all the info on a single panel. When it is unfolded, the app will transform into a larger panel.

Samsung has confirmed that it will begin with the mass production of the Infinity Flex Display in the coming months. Considering the technical challenges of producing it, it may not very easy to build the Infinity Flex Display that is made out of advanced composite polymer. In order to prevent damage caused due to frequent opening and closing of the Infinity Flex Display, Samsung has used malleable foldable adhesive to ensure that the internal components remain attached to the flexible screen. The incorporation of a new polarizer has reduced the thickness of the Infinity Flex Display by 45 percent. This suggests that that the Samsung’s first foldable phone will sport a thin form factor.

Samsung's new display designs

At the SDC 2018 event, Samsung also confirmed that in future will be launching phones with Infinity-U and Infinity-V display design. The Infinity-U phones will feature a U-shaped notch and Infinity-V smartphones will be equipped with V-shaped notch. Samsung will be also releasing phones with Infinity-O display in the near future. It features an O-shaped cutout on the top-left corner of the screen. The cutout will house the in-display selfie camera.
