Chinese brand Smartisan has launched a new smartphone dubbed as the R1 which has pushed the limits of smartphone storage capacity. The phone packs in more storage than some personal computers available on the market. Is storage the only speciality of the device? Not really. Let’s find out what the phone has to offer.
Display and Design
The smartphone features a bezel-less display with a notch at the top. The display is pretty big too, spanning 6.17-inches across, having a resolution of 2242 x 1080 pixels, and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The notch though isn’t similar to most smartphones on the market. Instead, it is similar to what the Essential Ph-1 has which comprises on the front facing camera. The phone does have some substantial bezel on the bottom though, bringing the screen-to-bezel ratio to about 84%.
Talking about the design, the phone does manage to check the right boxes as well. It is made up of grade 7 aluminium giving it a premium feel. The phone does have a fingerprint sensor which is located on the back and is very aesthetically embedded into the brand’s logo. The power and volume rockers located on the sides are circular in shape, which is a nice design element.
Performance and Storage
The Smartisan R1 is powered by the the latest Snapdragon 845 processor made by Qualcomm ticking at 2.8GHz coupled to the Adreno 630 GPU. This ensures that the phone aces almost any game or app you can throw at it. It will also come with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, so multitasking should never be a problem with this device.
Storage is the biggest selling point of this phone. If you are someone who keeps a moderate amount of data on-board the device, you could opt for the 64GB variant. If you’re someone who likes to binge watch shows and keep your episodes on board the phone’s memory, you could opt for the 128GB variant. However, the company has gone overboard and launched a 1TB variant as well. This should be more than enough for anything you would want to store on the phone. Here’s all of the variants launched:
- 6GB RAM + 64GB Storage
- 6GB RAM + 128GB Storage
- 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage
- 8GB RAM + 1TB Storage
The phone also incorporates UFS 2.1 for high data transfer speeds. This is especially useful for the 1TB variant if you are looking to transfer large files.
For the shutterbugs, the Smartisan R1 features a dual-rear camera setup comprising of a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor having an aperture of f/1.8 and a 20-megapixel Sony IMX350 with an aperture of f/1.75. This ensures that the phone’s camera is capable of capturing great images in both good as well as poor lighting. On the front, the company has blessed this offering with a 24-megapixel snapper having an aperture of f/2.0. It also comes with some neat software tricks such as AI-real time beauty mode.
Connectivity and Battery
The latest offering from Smartisan checks all the right boxes as far as connectivity is concerned, offering 3G and 4G with VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band WiFi and a USB Type C port for charging and data transfer. In the battery department, it features a 3,600 mAh unit which is fairly large to last through a day’s use. In addition to that, it also has support for Quick Charge 4+ and wireless charging. Unfortunately, the phone does ditch the 3.5mm audio jack in lieu of which, you will have to make use of the type-C port or connect through Bluetooth.
The phone will be available in two colour variants in China viz. Pure White and Carbon Black. The phone isn’t way too expensive either and is priced just like the OnePlus 5T and the upcoming OnePlus 6. The 1TB variant, however, is priced more premium.
6GB RAM + 64GB = ¥3,499 (approx. Rs. 37270)
6GB RAM + 128GB = ¥3,999 (approx. Rs. 42565)
8GB RAM + 128GB = ¥4,499 (approx. Rs. 47860)
