Smartphones: What’s in a name? Well, everything is

On: May 27, 2017

What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. A famous quote by William Shakespeare borrowed from even more famous play – Romeo & Juliet. Yeah, the same Romeo, the son of Montague, an idealist lover, an icon of true love, which is currently being portrayed as a villain with our so-called Anti-Romeo squad. Anyway, coming back to the quote, it is often used to imply that the names of things do not affect what they really are.

But today, I’ll not agree with this quote. Maybe, just for the sake of argument, I’m putting here. Maybe because in a world where your last name is enough for a reason to make you a victim of honour killing. Name matters. It matters a lot. Not just for people, for smartphones too. Yeah, that escalated quickly.

What's in a name?

We are in such a time, where a new smartphone is launched every other day, a new smartphone brand emerges every other month. In a world full of chaos, only the brand name gives you an identity. And a model name along with the brand name sets apart a smartphone from the crowd. Talking about an ideal name for a smartphone, OnePlus is the first and only brand which comes to my mind. For all the things OnePlus did right with its smartphones, I love them most for their naming culture. OnePlus One, OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. That’s how smartphones should be named.

Now, let’s have a look at other smartphone makers. Of course, when it comes to naming their smartphone with most irritating and long name, Intex gets the crown, hands down. Just to give you an example how it feels, here’s one scenario. Suppose you’re holding Intex Aqua Strong 5.1 Plus and a friend comes up and asks, “which phone is this?” Intex….Aqua…Strong…Five…Point…One…Plus. You get the point.

What's in a name?

Don’t name a smartphone like Khaleesi. Please.

Smartphone makers, are you listening? That’s irritating. Our life is already tough with all relationships, expectations, job, crowd in the local train, pending deadlines, and what not. Please don’t make it harder. Want to know more about how irritating it feels, ask someone from Pricebaba’s catalogue team. Ask them how it feels to add a new product with the name – Intex Aqua Power HD 4G.

If you think Intex is the only culprit here, you couldn’t be more wrong. Micromax, Spice, Panasonic, and even Samsung is eligible for this club. To name a few – Spice Smart Flo Mettle 4G, Micromax Canvas Juice 4G, Panasonic Eluga Ray Max, and yeah Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime 4G.

So, as they say, what’s in a name? Well, everything is. As Juliet like to say, “Tis but thy name that is my enemy. Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.”

O, be some other name!
