- Sony Honda electric car is in the works
- It may come equipped with a PlayStation 5 gaming console
- Sony Honda EV is expected to debut in 2025
Sony and Honda are working on an electric car. In October 2022, Sony Group and Honda Motor confirmed that they would collaborate to offer EVs in the United States in 2026, with the option to place pre-orders beginning in 2025. The EV born out of the two brands will have the specialities of both brands.
Sony will look into aspects like safety, entertainment, and adaptability. The new company will have access to Honda’s environmental and safety technologies, mobility development abilities, automobile body production technology, and after-sales service management knowledge. The two brands are reportedly in talks to include a PlayStation in the entertainment-focused EV in a bid to rival Tesla.
Sony Honda Mobility hints EV car with PlayStation 5 is “technologically possible”
Izumi Kawanishi, president of Sony Honda Mobility, said that it is “technologically possible” to incorporate a PlayStation 5 into the car. AMD said last year that the Model S and Model X’s infotainment systems are equipped with an AMD Ryzen processor and an RDNA 2 GPU.
Both Tesla vehicles have large horizontal displays, and the inclusion of the RDNA 2 GPU can offer a PlayStation 5-like experience, said Tesla CEO Elon Musk during a demo. A couple of games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, are available on Tesla cars. It is expected to soon add more powerful games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 in the coming days. Tesla’s Passenger Play feature, which allows users to play games, is only available when the vehicle is not in motion.
Talking about the Sony-Honda EV car, Kawanishi said, “To enjoy the space in your car, you have to make it a space where you don’t need to drive. The solution to this is autonomous driving,” He added that it will take a significant amount of time to make that happen. As far as the design of the car is concerned, it may look similar to the VISION-S concept car, which was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 at the beginning of this year.
BMW has also teamed up with gaming platform AirConsole to add casual gaming to its cars.
