Once popular smartphone maker Sony is now looking to make a comeback by launching not one but two top of the line smartphones dubbed as the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. As the name suggests, the former being the regular sized device while the latter a more compact version. Let’s have a look at what the Japanese firm has to offer with these smartphones.
This Xperia XZ2 will lead the pack for the company this year and bear the title of the flagship device. Taking a look at the device, you will notice that the phone no longer bears the company’s signature and slightly outdated design. Instead, it features a more modern metal glass sandwich design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. The additional perk of this design along with good aesthetics is the ability to charge wirelessly.
On the front of the phone, there is a large 5.7-inch FullHD+ display which has finally joined the league of bezel-less devices and rocks an 18:9 aspect ratio. Despite being the first bezel-less device from Sony, it is unfortunate that the phone still has a Full HD resolution. Being a flagship device in 2018 does require it to be Quad HD+, at the very least. The company has, however, scored some brownie points by layering the screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for enhancing its durability.
On the inside, it is powered by the flagship processor offered by Qualcomm – the Snapdragon 845. The SoC is mated to 4GB of RAM for smooth and seamless multitasking through its interface. This is also comparable to the Galaxy S9 which was launched yesterday, which also offers similar RAM. In terms of storage, the phone will be offered in a 64GB variant with the option to expand storage externally through a microSD card slot.
In the optics department, the phone doesn’t come with a fancy dual-camera setup but instead rocks a more modest set of sensors, one on each side. The primary camera located on the back features a 19-megapixel sensor which has an aperture of f/1.8. This is great for capturing good low-light images. The camera also allows for super slo-mo recording as well as recording regular videos in 4K. The front camera comprises of a 5-megapixel camera bearing an f/2.2 aperture. This is way below what other flagship devices have to offer and may be one of the bigger drawbacks of this smartphone.
If the battery is to be spoken about, the phone sports a decent 3,180mAh unit. This isn’t a lot, especially when you compare it with some mid-budget devices that can have batteries as big as 4,000mAh or even 5,000mAh. However, it must be kept in mind that the XZ2 is fitted with the most efficient processor offered by Qualcomm, which has given Sony the opportunity to scale down the battery. To add to that, the phone does support Quick Charge 3.0 so if you do happen to run out of battery at the moment you require it the most, you can quickly top it up and continue usage.
Finally, let’s discuss some features that are unique to the phone. Starting off with speakers. The Xperia XZ2 comes with front-facing stereo speakers. This is especially helpful if you are looking to consume video content. It may also prove helpful since the company has decided to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack 🙁 Secondly, the signature mark of most Sony smartphones (it is now available with most other phones as well) – being waterproof. That’s right, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 carry on the trait and are IP68 certified and protected from the elements (water and dust).
Let’s also quickly glance at the Xperia XZ2 Compact. This phone is largely overshadowed by its elder sibling. It features similar specifications except a few. Firstly, as its name suggests, it is a more compact device. It has a smaller 5-inch FullHD+display. With that being said, its pixel density is marginally higher than the XZ2. Owing to its smaller size, its battery capacity has also taken a hit and there’s a smaller 2,870 mAh unit on the Xperia XZ2 Compact. It also misses out on the S-Force speakers that its sibling is fitted with.
The Xperia XZ2 Compact will be offered in four attractive colours viz. White Silver, Black, Moss Green and Coral Pink. The regular sized Xperia XZ2 will be offered in Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green and Ash Pink colour hues. Both phones will hit shelves across the globe starting next month.
