Sony WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones have been launched. It succeeds the well-received Sony WH-1000XM4, which debuted in 2020. Compared to the predecessor model, the WH-1000XM5 offers a refreshed design and improved noise-cancellation. It also commands a higher price tag.
The WH-1000XM5 comes with cylindrical ear cups, which can rotate sideways. However, unlike the WH-1000XM4, they cannot be folded inwards. It is equipped with a slimmer headband with a sliding design. The audio drivers available on the device promise natural sound quality. It promises up to 40 hours of battery life.
Sony WH-1000XM5 specifications and features
The Sony WH-1000XM5 has 30mm audio drivers, which is smaller than the 40mm drivers available on the WH-1000XM4. However, the Japanese tech giant claims that the new wireless headphones offer enhanced high-frequency response with natural sound output. It offers Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity and carries support for sound profiles such as A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, and HSP. The DSEE Extreme function onboard uses AI technology to improve the sound quality of compressed audio files by restoring high-range sound.
The WH-X1000M5 supports touch controls like tap and swipe gestures. It also features a physical button for toggling between ANC and ambient noise. For a better ANC experience, the WH-X1000M5 comes equipped with eight microphones and a pair of QN1 audio processors. With ANC turned on, it can last for up to 30 days. It offers a battery life of around 40 hours when ANC is turned off. It features a USB Type-C port for charging, and it takes around 3.5 hours to achieve a full charge. Sony claims a 3-minute charge will allow it to offer 3 hours of playback time.
The Sony WH-X1000XM5 carries support for SBC, AAC, and LDAC Bluetooth codecs. Some of the other features that are available on the WH-X1000XM5 include support for wear detection, multi-device connection, Google Assistant, Alexa, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Audio, Hi-Res Audio Wireless, 360-degree reality audio, and support for 360 Spatial Sound on select TVs from Sony.
It comes with a stereo jack and a detachable cord that measures 1.2 metres in length. Lastly, it weighs around 250 grams and comes with a collapsible carry case.
Sony WH-1000XM5 price and availability
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is now available in the United States for $399 (~Rs 30,850). It is $50 (~Rs 3,860) more expensive than its predecessor. It can be bought in colours like Silver and Black. Sony is yet to confirm the pricing and availability of the WH-1000XM5 for India.
