Sony returns to compact phones with the Xperia 5

The Sony Xperia 1 flagship phone that had gone official at the beginning of this year featured a 6.5-inch OLED 4K display. Today, the Japanese tech giant has taken off covers from the Xperia 5. Compared to the Xperia 1, the newly unveiled Xperia 5 is more compact flagship phone as it houses a 6.1-inch display. It retains the triple camera setup found on the Xperia 1 and it is fueled by the Snapdragon 855 SoC.

The Xperia 5 has an IP65/68 rated dustproof and water-resistant chassis that features Gorilla Glass 6 panels on the front and rear. The device measures 158 x 68 x 8.2mm and weighs 164 grams. It features a 6.1-inch CinemaWide HDR OLED display that produces a tall aspect ratio of 21:9. It offers full HD+ resolution of 1,080 x 2,520 pixels and carries support for 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut.

The Snapdragon 855 mobile platform is present under the hood of the Sony Xperia 5 along with 6GB of RAM. The native storage of the phone is 128GB and it has a microSD card slot for additional storage. The handset includes a 3,140mAh battery that supports fast charging. The company claims that it can gain 50 percent battery power with a 30-minute charge. Android 9 Pie comes preloaded on the device. It comes with Game Enhancer for a disturbance-free gaming performance. It also features dynamic vibration system for an enhanced gaming experience.

The triple camera setup of the Xperia 5 has a regular 12-megapixel lens with f/1.6 aperture and hybrid OIS/EIS stabilization, a 12-megpapixel superwide f/2.4 lens with 5-axis stabilization and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, hybrid OIS/EIS stabilization and 2x optical zoom. The triple cameras offer features like HDR, Eye Autofocus, up to 10fps continuous shooting with autofocus or auto exposure, bokeh mode, 4K HDR movie recording, RAW noise reduction and Cinema Pro mode for shooting in 21:9 format with 4K HDR and 24fps settings. The Xperia 1 had its triple camera system placed at the center of the upper half of the device. On the Xperia 5, the camera module has repositioned to top-left corner. On the front of the Xperia 5 is an f/2.0 aperture 8-megapixel selfie camera that comes with features like 5-axis stabilization, HDR and display flash.

The Xperia 5 comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It is equipped with Dolby Atmos powered stereo speakers with Hi-Res audio support. The Smart Connectivity allows the Xperia 5 to intelligently switch between LTE and Wi-Fi signals when it detects poor signal strength. The smartphone is compatible with PS4’s DualShock 4 controller. The connectivity features that are available on the Xperia 5 include dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 4G VoLTE, v5.0 Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, GLONASS and USB Type-C. There’s no 3.5mm audio jack on the device.

Sony Xperia 5 Price and Availability

The pre-orders of the Xperia 5 will begin next week in Europe. The pricing of the smartphone is expected to be confirmed in the next few days. Customers in Europe who pre-order the phone will get WF-1000XM3 noise-cancelling headphones from Sony along with the handset. The shipments of the phone will start in October. The Xperia 5 can be bought in colors like Black, Blue, Grey and Red. There is no word on the arrival of Xperia 5 in India.
