Tata Tiago EV launched as India’s cheapest EV: Features, price, and more

Highlights

  • The Tata Tiago EV has finally been revealed after weeks of anticipation
  • While the EV is now official, it won’t reach customers until January 2023
  • The top-end Tiago EV model can run for over 300 km

Following the availability of EVs like the Nexon and the Tigor, Tata Motors has just unveiled the latest entrant to its lineup — the Tiago EV. The launch comes days after the EV’s arrival was confirmed, while some leaks also helped us get a decent idea of what to expect. Curiously, the Tiago EV’s announcement comes just a day before the arrival of the Citroën C3 EV, which also happens to be a hatchback.

Tata Tiago EV variants, features, and range

Customers can get the Tiago EV in two battery options — one with a 19.2 kWh battery and the other with a 24 kWh unit. There are a total of six models to choose from, starting with the entry-level Tiago EV XE and going all the way up to XZ+ Tech Lux. Variants like the XZ+ and the XZ+ Tech Lux feature a 7.2 kW charging option while the rest can charge at 3.3 kW.

Tata says the model with the 19.2 kWh battery can run for up to 250 km on a single charge. On the other hand, the 24 kWh version can go for 315 km, which is pretty decent for a small car. In terms of acceleration, the automaker says the Tiago EV can go from 0 to 60 kmph in 5.7 seconds. There’s also a Sports mode which can boost performance to a certain extent.

The company claims its 7.2 kW charger can recharge the Tiago EV in 3 hours and 36 minutes. Meanwhile, a DC fast charger can juice up the car from 10 to 80% in only 57 minutes. Internally, customers will get cruise control, adjustable and foldable OVRMs, push-button start, automatic wipers/headlamps, leatherette seats, a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, etc. There’s significant EV branding externally to make it stand out from the EV’s ICE and CNG counterparts, including blue accents.

Tata Tiago EV price and availability

With a starting price of just Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tiago is the cheapest EV in the Indian market. The top-end variant, XZ+ Tech Lux, has a price tag of Rs 11.79 lakhs. Tata clarified that these are introductory prices that will be available for the first 10,000 bookings/customers. Tata Motors is further reserving 2,000 units of the Tiago EV for existing Tata EV owners.

Bookings for the Tiago EV begin on October 10, 2022, while deliveries will only commence by January next year.
