Tata Tiago EV with cruise control launching later this month: Here’s everything you need to know about the cheapest electric car in India

  • The Tata Tiago EV will be officially unveiled on September 28
  • We’ve already learned a fair bit about the vehicle thanks to teasers and leaks
  • The Tiago EV is all set to become the cheapest electric car in India

Tata Motors has a significant foothold in the Indian EV segment, courtesy of cars like the Nexon electric SUV and the Tigor electric sedan. A third model has long been rumoured to join the lineup, namely the Tiago EV. Much like its ICE counterpart, the Tiago will possibly sell within the range of Rs 10 lakhs. Tata recently confirmed that the new EV would be cheaper than the Tigor EV, which starts from Rs 12.50 lakhs (ex-showroom).

The automaker has also confirmed that the new electric hatchback will be officially unveiled on September 28, while the EV should reach consumers shortly thereafter.

Tata Tiago EV features and range

A leak earlier today has confirmed the presence of cruise control within the new Tiago EV, which could be a game changer considering its expected price tag. The electric car will also feature multi-mode regeneration, with Tata providing dedicated buttons for both functions within the steering wheel.

Much like its other EV siblings, the Tiago EV should utilise Tata’s in-house Ziptron electric vehicle technology. While there is no confirmation on the type of motor the new EV will use, it’s safe to assume the automobile will leverage the same 75PS/170Nm motor as the Tigor EV.

While Tata’s electric sedan utilizes a 26kWh battery pack, this unit is unlikely to feature on the new Tiago EV due to space constraints. Regardless, consumers can expect a battery pack that can deliver at least 300 kms on a full charge.

Tata Tiago EV design

Barring a few accent colours to make it stand out from its ICE counterpart, we don’t expect a lot of visual changes in the exterior design of the Tiago EV. In addition to the customary EV badging, Tata could likely launch the vehicle in new colours. Interior design is expected to mimic the ICE version of the Tiago, though upholstery could be upgraded to make it stand out.

Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto should be supported by default, along with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Additionally, we also expect a semi-digitized instrument cluster, projector headlamps, automatic air conditioning, and a convenient start/stop push button.

Tata Tiago EV safety

Since the ICE variants of the Tigor and Tiago have received a healthy 4-star rating under NCAP’s testing standards, the same can be expected of the electrified version of the Tiago EV. Moreover, Tata’s recent EV launches include the highest level of safety, which should continue with the upcoming electric hatchback.

Tata Tiago EV expected price

Tata has confirmed that the Tiago EV would be cheaper than the Tigor EV. However, we still don’t have precise info on the selling price of the new electric hatchback. What we do know, however, is that the EV would be placed below the Tigor EV in terms of pricing, meaning it could cost somewhere between Rs 10 to 12 lakhs, for the entry-level and mid-tier versions. This would effectively make the Tiago EV the cheapest mass-produced EV in the market.
