TCL C8 Android AI TV first impressions: a smart TV you can use hands-free

The Chinese appliance manufacturer, TCL launched its AI x IoT initiative last year at the IFA 2019. The initiative was geared towards building a smarter home with connected appliances. The brand launched multiple products in the TV, audio products and smartphones category. TCL has now brought its C8-series of televisions to India in two display sizes – 55-inch and 65-inch. I was present at the launch event held today and here are my first impressions.

The television is crafted using plastic in its entirety but flaunts an extremely slim and sleek profile. It features nearly non-existent bezels and an attached soundbar at the bottom, due to which it seems like it has a massive chin. I would suggest using the provided metal leg with the TV and prop it up on a table as the C8-series is quite chunky from the side and can protrude out quite a bit if mounted on the wall.  You will find a number of ports on the back including two HDMI 2.0 ports with HDCP 2.2, one HDMI 2.0 port with ARC, two USB ports, AV In, 3.5mm out, Digital Optical Audio and an Ethernet port.

As for the display, the brand is offering the television in 55- or 65-inch variants with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels screen resolution. The display is further aided by Dolby Vision, HDR Pro, Wide Colour Gamut and MEMC, which enhance the picture quality further. During my short stint with the television, I found the picture quality to be quite brilliant with good viewing angles. As for the audio, the TV comes with an integrated soundbar featuring four Onkyo speakers tuned by Dolby Atmos.

Coming to the core specifications, the TCL C8-series AI Android smart TV comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box. As such, you get Google Assistant and Chromecast built-in with the smart TV. Additionally, the smart TV also comes with support for Alexa, which is a bonus. The remote control provided with the television comes with dedicated buttons for Netflix and Google assistant. There are pre-installed apps for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Hostar, Zee5, Play Movies and Play Music. You can also download additional apps using the Play Store.

TCL also launched AI Ultra-inverter AC along with the C8 series and you can control both the AC and TV simply using the trigger word ‘Ok Google’ and speaking the command. The TV is equipped with Far Field Voice technology, which enhances the reception of voice commands for better control. The company also revealed the TCL Home App as part of its AI x IoT initiative, which lets you control all connected appliances using your smartphone.

In short, if you are looking for a loaded smart TV that gives you solid value for money, you cannot go wrong with the TCL C8 series of AI Android TVs. The 55C8 model will set you back by 49,990 and 65C8 will retail for Rs 69,990. The televisions will soon go on sale across major online and offline retailers in India.
