Telegram has launched a premium service as it surpasses 700 million users

  • Telegram has crossed 700 million monthly active users
  • The app also introduced its premium membership, which is priced between $5 and $6 depending on area

Telegram, the encrypted messaging service, revealed on Sunday that it has 700 million active monthly users and has introduced a new paid subscription plan. According to Telegram, “by paying to Telegram Premium, users will have access to expanded boundaries, 4 GB file uploads, faster downloads, unique stickers and answers, improved chat management, and much more.” Among the new features are ad-free surfing, dynamic profile photos, and voice-to-text capabilities.

The premium subscription pricing would vary depending on location, though the Telegram statement did not reveal the precise cost.  According to Tech Crunch, the premium service will cost $6 for iPhone users in India; apart from that, it will cost 5.49 ($5.77) monthly in Spain.

Though the app is adding new premium services, the CEO of the Dubai-based startup, Pavel Durov, told users last week that accessible functions will remain free and maintain the company’s privacy-focused strategy.

On June 10, Durov teased the arrival of the premium version on Telegram. “While our testing with privacy-focused advertisements in public one-to-many channels have proven to be more popular than we anticipated,” he said, “I believe Telegram should be financed primarily by its users, rather than marketers.” He further stated, “Therefore, in way, our users will always be our first concern.”
