The Centric A1: A promising Mid-Budget Smartphone with Impressive Internals

On: December 8, 2017

CENTRiC, the India-based company has launched a new smartphone which is dubbed as the A1. The smartphone is a pretty impressive looking device which feels robust to hold in the hand. The phone is also priced reasonably low and will definitely not burn a hole in your pocket. Let’s have a closer look at what the phone has to offer.

Hardware, Design and Display

The phone is not to be misjudged by its affordable price tag as it sports a sturdy metal unibody design. The phone which is aimed at the young audience offers some great durability and can withstand drops without much damage. On the rear side of the phone, it packs in a fingerprint sensor which feels super snappy. With this additional fingerprint sensor bundled with the phone, securely getting into the phone couldn’t have felt easier.

In the display department, the phone rocks a decently sized 5.5-inch Full HD display having a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The display panel is capable of reproducing a crisp pixel density of about 236 PPI. To add to its integrity, the display is also layered with Dragontrail Glass protection. In addition to that, the front of the phone features 2.5D curved glass so the screen melts over the edge and adds to the user experience.

In the optics department, the CENTRiC A1 sports a 13-megapixel camera on the rear-side which is coupled with an LED flash. The primary camera features an autofocus sensor which is capable of recording videos in Full HD up to 30 frames per second. Up front, the phone packs in a treat for selfie enthusiasts as well with the 8-megapixel snapper. To add to its charm, even the selfie camera is coupled with an LED flash, so low-light images will also appear great. This is something not many phones in this range offer. In fact, even other popular phones like the Moto G5 which are priced in this range lack this feature, making this phone truly stand out.

The phone’s stock camera app packs in some interesting features like Red-eye reduction and Triaxial-levelling. With these features, the captured images will look more enhanced and leveled. The phone can also click images when the fingerprint sensor is triggered in the camera app. This reduces the effort to find the click-button as the sensor is more accessible. Out of the box, the phone can capture around 3,700 images which can be stored in the internal storage.

Performance and Storage

Underneath this sleek looking phone is the octa-core Snapdragon 430 SoC by Qualcomm that powers this device. This processor is a tried and tested chipset and offers great performance without compromising much on battery life. The A1 also packs in an Adreno 505 GPU to enhance its gaming performance.

On the storage front, the phone ships with 32GB of internal storage which can be further expanded up to 256GB externally through a microSD card.

Software and Additional Features

On the software front, the phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and should see a likely upgrade to Android Oreo in the coming months. In terms of additional features, the phone packs in a host of attractive additions.

To start with, it features ‘DTS Sound’ technology which provides an improved surround sound. The speaker of the phone reproduces loud and audible sound when the DTS Sound setting is switched on.With DTS, the sound doesn’t get distorted even at higher volumes which means you could use the phone for playing loud music and not compensate for the loss of bass. The phone doesn’t restrict DTS audio to its speakers only but also provides an immersive experience when headphones are connected to its 3.5mm headphone jack. That’s right! The phone also includes a headphone jack when many companies are eliminating it for a Type-C port.

The CENTRiC smartphone also allows for switching between DTS audio and the stock audio experience provided by the phone’s chipset. This can easily be done from the sound settings section.

Apart from that, the phone also comes with two of CENTRiC’s applications pre-installed – CENTRiC Store and CENTRiC Care. The Care app that is installed provides instant access to the company’s customer support team in case something on the phone misbehaves. This is a rare feature to find on a phone priced at this range. In fact, even some premium priced phones lack in this aspect. With this service, the company has made sure they provide the user with a great post-purchase experience. After all, a happy customer is a loyal customer!

Battery and Connectivity

The company has decided to not cut corners in the battery department and pack in a 3,000 mAh Li-Po battery pack which can last a long while before running out. The phone also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. With this feature, the phone can be quickly charged up when you are in a hurry. To add to this, as mentioned above, the phone also integrates a reversible USB Type-C port on the bottom which even phones like the Redmi Note 4 and Lenovo’s K8 Note lack. Kudos, CENTRiC!

On the connectivity front, the CENTRiC A1 supports WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-SIM, and GPS. It also supports 2G, 3G, 4G, VoLTE and ViLTE, which allows for video calling over 4G.

At Rs. 9,999, the CENTRiC A1 offers much more than other phones in the same budget. In fact, it comes with some unique features like the DTS sound technology among others. The A1 is also among the very few phones that offer Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 at this price point. All of this makes it a really impressive smartphone in this budget.
