This Tata Tigor EV owner has never paid for charging

Highlights

  • The owner leverages a comprehensive solar energy system at home to recharge the EV
  • This EV sedan is reportedly driven for around 60 km each day
  • A total of 12,500 km have been driven on the Tigor EV so far without paying for charging

Launched almost a year ago, the Tata Tigor EV is not as popular as the Nexon EV, yet it is among the few electric sedans to sell in the Indian market. A Tigor EV owner, Samarth, from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has devised a novel way to never spend money on EV charging by turning his home into a fully solar-powered property.

Mr Samarth says he bought the Tata Tigor EV around five months ago, and that the automobile is charged via the 10kW solar panel established at his home. With the EV sedan running for around 12,500 kilometers so far, this effectively means the owner has never spent money on charging the automobile.

The caveat here is that installing solar panels of this capacity can be rather expensive, not to mention the batteries and inverters. But it’s an investment that can pay off in the long run, especially if you install enough panels and other equipment to run an entire home.

Speaking to the PluginIndia Electric Vehicles YouTube channel, Samarth says his Tigor EV runs for around 60 km each day, and that he mostly drives on the car’s Sport mode, which is ideally suited for rough roads. He spoke about the experience of owning the Tigor EV, adding that Tata Motors’ service has been good. The owner also had some minor complaints with regard to interior design and wheelspin, which you can watch in its entirety from the video below.

Tata Motors at the forefront of EV adoption

As we touched on above, the Tata Nexon EV is the country’s best-selling EV by a distance. The automaker recently unveiled a refreshed version of the car, calling it the Nexon EV Prime. This variant is sold in five versions, with additions like Multi-Mode Regen, Indirect Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (iTPMS), and Cruise Control. The new range has an ex-showroom starting price of Rs 14.99 lakhs.
