Top phones with 90Hz and 120Hz displays you can buy in India: OnePlus 8 Pro, POCO X2 and more

OnePlus can be credited with kickstarting the trend of high refresh rate displays with the launch of its OnePlus 7 Pro last year. While the refresh rate doesn’t contribute directly to the performance of the handset, it ensures faster scrolling and smoother animations, resulting in an enhanced user experience. Brands were quick to pick up on this feature, which is now a hot trend in the smartphone industry.

We have seen high refresh rate displays not only on high-end flagships from Samsung and OnePlus, but also on affordable offerings from POCO and Realme in the last few months. If you are wondering which smartphones in India offer 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rates, we have got you covered. Here’s a list of all smartphones featuring displays with a high refresh rate that you can buy in India.

What is refresh rate?

If you are a gamer, you probably know what refresh rate is. The feature has been around for a while now, but only on high-end gaming rigs. Only recently has the technology made its way to smartphones. Measured in Hertz (Hz), the refresh rate is an indication of how quickly the display panel updates, or the content on the screen refreshes.

In layman’s terms, higher refresh rates make the display feel more responsive and fluid. Such displays offer smooth animation, making scrolling through apps, images, web pages and more lightning fast.

What is a 90Hz display?

The OnePlus 7 Pro that was launched last year can be credited with making 90Hz displays mainstream. A 90Hz display can refresh frames 90 times every second, which is pretty high for a mobile device. A 90Hz display takes just 11.1ms to fully refresh between frames, as compared to 16.6ms on a 60Hz panel.

The difference might seem minuscule on paper, but makes a world of difference when it comes to the overall smoothness of the display content. There are now several smartphones from the likes of OnePlus, Realme, and others offering 90Hz refresh rates.

What is a 120Hz display?

120Hz displays can refresh a frame 120 times a second, leading to super-smooth user experience on the smartphone. With double the speed of a 60Hz display, the animations and interactions on a 120Hz display are super smooth. The POCO X2 is one of the most affordable smartphones to offer a 120Hz display in India.

How does a 90Hz/120Hz display improve the gaming experience?

To answer this in a simple manner, a higher refresh rate not only reduces the motion blur and provides a smoother experience, but also reduces latency. For the uninitiated, latency is the delay between the user’s touch input and the intended action being carried out on the display. Therefore, if you are a serious gamer, you will benefit from the display responsiveness and reduced reaction time. It’s worth noting that the list of games supporting 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates is pretty limited at the moment, but popular games including PUBG Mobile are slated to get support for high refresh rates later this year.
