Top smartphones launched at MWC 2019

Mobile World Congress is an important event for smartphone manufacturers, with several brands using the platform to launch their flagship phones in front of the whole world. At MWC 2019, we were treated to a slew of launches from brands like Sony, LG, Xiaomi and more. Here are the top phones launched at the show:

Samsung Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50

Samsung showcased its mid-range Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 at MWC 2019. The phones have Infinity-U displays which means that there’s a waterdrop style notch on them which helps to improve the screen-to-body ratio. The Galaxy A50 also has an under-display fingerprint sensor in addition to its 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging, Exynos 9610 octa-core processor with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage, and 25MP + 5MP + 8MP rear cameras. The selfie shooter on the phone has a 25MP sensor.

The Galaxy A30, on the other hand, is kitted with an Exynos 7604 octa-core processor with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of storage. It has a dual rear camera setup in a 16MP + 5MP configuration, while the front camera has a 16MP sensor. The phone carries the same 4,000mAh battery with 15W Fast Charging, 6.4-inch FHD+ Infinity-U panel and 19.5:9 aspect ratio display as the Galaxy A50.

Sony Xperia 1

Sony Xperia 1 launched at MWC 2019

Sony has launched the world’s first smartphone with a 21:9 aspect ratio display and it is called Xperia 1. The device has a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on top for protection. It has IP68 certification and the fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side in integration with the power button. This offering is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable internal memory.

It is also the first Sony smartphone to come with a triple rear camera setup, where the first is the primary lens, second is a super-wide angle lens and the third is a telephoto lens, all with 12MP resolution. The selfie snapper is an 8MP sensor. The Sony Xperia 1 has a 3,300mAh battery with support for Fast Charging and it runs Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box.

Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus

The Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are mid-range offerings with dual rear cameras and side mounted fingerprint sensors. The Xperia 10 carries a 6-inch HD+ display while the Xperia 10 Plus sports a 6.5-inch FHD+ panel, both with an aspect ratio of 21:9. The former has a 13MP + 5MP rear camera setup and the latter has been launched with a 12MP + 8MP configuration on the back. Both the phones have an 8MP selfie snapper.

The bigger model runs on the Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The Xperia 10 comes kitted with Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The former has a 3,000mAh battery while the latter is supported by a 2,870mAh unit.

Centric S1

CENTRIC S1 launched at MWC 2019

Indian brand Centric launched the S1 with a pop-up selfie snapper and an in-display fingerprint reader. The phone has a tall 6.39-inch AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and 92 percent screen-to-body ratio. It relies on the MediaTek Helio P70 octa-core processor with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage. The phone has a vertically placed dual rear camera setup in a 16MP + 5MP setup, along with a single selfie snapper of 8MP.

The display is nearly bezel-less thanks to the pop-up selfie camera, and offers full HD+ resolution. It is powered by a 3,800mAh battery with support for Pump Express 3.0 Fast Charging and wireless charging. The Centric S1 can gather 50 percent charge within 20 minutes, according to the company.

LG G8 ThinQ and V5 ThinQ 5G

LG launched two flagships at MWC, the G8 ThinQ and V50 ThinQ 5G. The G8 ThinQ relies on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The smartphone features a 6.1-inch FullVision OLED display panel with QHD resolution and a notch up top. It also has Crystal Sound OLED technology which lets the display perform the function of a speaker. Camera-wise, the phone has a dual rear setup with 12MP + 16MP configuration in addition to the 8MP ToF ‘Z’ camera which helps in bokeh mode shots. The phone has a dedicated Google Assistant button, 3D Face Unlock, Hand ID, Air Motion gesture control and a 3,500mAh battery capacity. The LG G8 ThinQ also comes in a special edition with triple rear cameras called the LG G8s ThinQ.

LG V50 ThinQ launched at MWC 2019

The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is the company’s first smartphone to have 5G connectivity. It also has an optional accessory called Dual Screen, which adds a second screen to the smartphone. The panels can run separate applications simultaneously and the accessory can be used as a gaming pad as well. The main OLED display of the phone is 6.4-inches in size with QHD+ resolution. The phone runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor along with Snapdragon X50 5G modem. It has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM. The flagship carries a triple rear camera setup with 12MP + 16MP + 12MP configuration while the selfie cameras consist of 8MP +5MP sensors. The device relies on a 4,000mAh battery, has IP68 certification and runs Android 9 Pie.

Nokia 9 Pureview

The Nokia 9 PureView is the first smartphone with five rear cameras. The smartphone carries a 5.9-inch display with QHD+ resolution and an in-display fingerprint sensor. It relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor for power along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM. The ZEISS-certified camera setup includes dual 12MP RGB sensors and three 12MP monochromatic sensors with an aperture of f/1.8. The smartphone also has a 20MP selfie snapper which aids in Face Unlock.

Like most Nokia phones, the Nokia 9 PureView is also an Android One device and runs the latest Android 9 Pie. It carries a 3,320mAh battery with support for 18W Fast Charging and Qi Wireless Charging. The phone does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Huawei Mate X 5G

The Huawei Mate X is the first 5G and foldable offering from the Chinese manufacturer. The two displays on the phone are 6.6-inches and 6.3-inches tall, respectively. The Mate X looks sleek thanks to its Falcon Wing Hinge technology. On being opened, the smartphone becomes an 8-inch tablet with 11mm thickness and a resolution of 2,480 x 2,200 pixels. The device runs on the Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 980 octa-core processor and Balong 5000 7nm 5G multi-mode modem. The performance is further enhanced by 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The foldable design of the offering lets the Leica-certified cameras capture selfies as well. The device has a 4,500mAh battery with support for 55W Huawei SuperCharge. The fingerprint sensor of the phone is integrated with the power button.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G is the first offering by Xiaomi to feature 5G technology. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and X50 5G modem, offering 2Gbps+ download speeds. The phone has a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The selfie snapper of the phone is hidden in a magnetic slider and comes in a 24MP + 24MP configuration with AI live selfie video bokeh and AI catchlight. The main shooter on the device has a dual camaera setup with 12MP + 12MP sensors.

The battery capacity of the phone is 3,800mAh and it supports Quick Charge 4+. It has a dedicated Google Assistant button along with a Hybrid Cooling System which helps in sustaining peak performance without overheating.

Nubia Alpha

ZTE has launched the world’s first foldable smartphone which users can wear on their wrist. The device has a 4-inch flexible OLED display panel with a resolution of 960 x 192 pixels and a 36:9 aspect ratio. The frame of the device is water resistant and the display is coated with heat-resistant polymide. The performance of the wearable is managed by the Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage.

The battery capacity of the Nubia Alpha is 500mAh. The device offers support for motion gestures and AIM. The wearable supports sleep and heart rate monitoring, fitness tracking and mobile payments. It has a 5MP camera as well, and the eSIM variant of the gadget can make phone calls via 4G LTE.
