Twitter’s verified accounts to cost $8 per month, here’s what it will mean

Highlights

  • Twitter CEO Elon Musk has confirmed the cost of a blue tick verified profile
  • It will cost $8 per month and bring several benefits
  • Benefits include priority in replies, mentions and searches, and fewer ads

Twitter’s new owner and CEO, Elon Musk, has confirmed the price users need to pay to get a “blue tick” verified account on Twitter. Around a week ago, Musk officially acquired Twitter and immediately sacked Twitter’s top executives, Parag Agarwal, Ned Segal, and Vijaya Gadde, among other directors. Previously, owning a verified account did not require users to spend any money. It was only meant for users like celebrities, politicians, and journalists to distinguish genuine accounts from imposters and parodies. Verified accounts on Twitter carry a blue tick mark next to their display name.

Earlier this year, Twitter introduced a paid service called Twitter Blue in some regions like the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. By paying a monthly fee of $4.99 (~Rs 400), Twitter Blue users were able to take advantage of additional features like undo tweets, bookmark folders, reader, themes, and so on. After taking over Twitter, Musk has confirmed that the company will charge a monthly fee to Twitter users for owing a verified account with a blue tick mark.

Rumours started swirling earlier this week that the fee for a verified Twitter count could be as high as $20 (~Rs 1,650) per month. In a recent tweet, Musk confirmed that users will need to pay a monthly fee of $8 (~$650) per month for a verified account. At the same time, he criticised the old verification method as a “lords and peasants system.”

Musk revealed that the new verification system will bring the following benefits:

–  Priority in replies, mentions, and searches for defeating spam/scam

– Ability to post long videos and audio

– Half as many ads

Musk said that the social media platform will allow a paywall bypass for creators and publishers who are willing to work with them. Hence, creators will be provided with a new revenue stream. The details of these new features are expected to get confirmed in the coming days.

He added that there will be a secondary tag below the name of the Twitter user to denote a public figure. This feature is already available for politicians.

Previous reports said that Musk has asked Twitter engineers to implement the Twitter Blue service in effect by November 7th, 2022. The $8 (~Rs 660) per month price pertains to the US market.  The price will be adjusted according to the “country proportionate to purchasing power parity,” said Musk.

Some may think anyone will be able to get a blue tick for $8 per month. Readers should be aware that users will be required to go through the same processes for verification. However, users will have to pay a monthly fee to continue receiving the blue tick.
