Pongal weekend was exciting for fans of the Tamil film industry, as two much-awaited films were released. This year during the Sankranti festivities, got an extended opening weekend. Two superstars, Vijay, and Ajith had remarkable openings with their films, Varisu and Thunivu, which competed against each other.
Varisu and Thunivu: Box Office Report
After one week of a successful theatrical run, Thalapathy Vijay took the lead with his highly appreciated film Varisu, and Ajith’s Thunivu fell short by a margin, despite having positive reviews for the film. The opening was massive for Varisu, and the trend continued with footfall for his film increasing eventually, even on the weekdays. On the other hand, Thunivu stayed steady with marginal numbers.
However, trade media reports reveal that both films, even today, are enjoying the theatrical run, and a change in the trend is expected post the following week.
Pongal is considered to be a popular time to release the film, and the demand for this festive release has continued for decades. Both films Kollywood films were released mid-week on January 11, 2023, and the clash was highly expected, with both the superstars having a massive fanbase. Thanks to the public holiday in Tamil Nadu and impressive storylines, one of the films registered a double-digit number at the box office.
Varisu: Box Office Collection
Among the two films, Varisu made its way to the 100-crore club in the first week of screening in India. As per box office reports are concerned, the film garnered Rs. 102.40 crores nett in 6 days. This includes the releases in all languages, where surprisingly, the release in Hindi is doing well for the film, along with the impressive Tamil version.
The worldwide collection of Varisu reveals that the makers have managed to collect Rs. 168.83 crore gross, of which Rs. 48 crore is from the overseas screening only.
Thunivu: Box Office Collection
On the other hand, Thunivu has managed a nett collection of Rs. 77.55 crores in 6 days at the box office in India. This includes the release in both languages; however, most of the collection is from the primary language – Tamil – whereas the Telugu language release has not made a mark and contributed merely Rs. 3 crores at the box office.
Regarding worldwide collection, Thunivu managed to bag an impressive collection of Rs. 123.50 crores, a gross of which Rs. 32 crore is from overseas screenings.
