Internet speed test portal Ookla released a report on mobile internet speeds for Q3 2020. Vi (formerly known as Vodafone Idea) emerged as the fastest 4G operator in India. The report also reveals Hyderabad as the fastest city for mobile internet speeds and that Reliance Jio leads in terms of 4G availability among top service providers.
Ookla said in a blog post that “local operators efforts to improve and expand 4G coverage across the country have provided customers in India with an increasingly fast and modern mobile internet experience.”
Vi offers the fastest mobile data speeds in India
According to Ookla’s report, during the third quarter Vi registered download and upload speeds of 13.74Mbps and 6.19Mbps respectively. Airtel followed with download speeds of 13.58Mbps and upload speed of 4.15Mbps. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio stood at third position with 9.71Mbps and 3.41Mbps download and upload speeds respectively.
Region-wise, Hyderabad topped the charts in list of cities with the fastest download and upload speeds on mobile networks clocking 14.35Mbps and 4.42Mbps respectively. Mumbai came second followed by Vishakapatnam, Chennai and Kolkata to complete the top five spots. Delhi stood sixth, while Bengaluru was ninth in the list. Among the 15 most populous cities, Kanpur and Lucknow sit at the bottom of the list registering the slowest download and upload speeds.
Ookla reported that Jio led the 4G availability in the country during the third quarter. It was available in 99.7 percent of locations, with Airtel and Vi coming second and third, having a 4G presence in 98.7 and 91.1 percent locations respectively. India also led the 4G availability among the largest South Asian countries during the third quarter.
India ranks 131st in Global Mobile Data Speeds
India lagged behind Pakistan in terms of faster mobile download speeds. The later recorded 39.7 percent faster download speeds than India. The report revealed that both India and Pakistan showed improved download speeds over mobile networks during last and this year’s third quarter. Ookla stated in its blog post that “India saw an 11.6% increase while Pakistan’s mean mobile download speeds increased by 24.1% during the same period.”
In Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for mobile internet speeds, India ranked 131st in the month of September. The country registered average download speed of 12.07Mbps. Neighbouring countries including China, SriLanka, Pakistan and Nepal are positioned above India in the list.
