Vivo’s APEX 2020 concept phone was supposed to be showcased at MWC 2020, but coronavirus derailed the tech trade show. The smartphone maker has officially taken the wraps off the APEX 2020 in Beijing, China. It is the successor to last year’s APEX 2019 that featured a port-less and button-less design. The APEX 2020 takes things to a whole new level with innovative and industry-first features. Much like concept cars, it’s unlikely that the APEX 2020 will ever see the light of day. Let’s take a look at the concept phone below:
Vivo APEX 2020 specifications and features
The Vivo APEX 2020’s striking highlight is its 6.45-inch waterfall display with 120-degree curved edges. The concept smartphone gets rid of physical buttons and ports. It relies on pressure-sensitive buttons on the side and comes with third-generation Screen SoundCasting technology. The concept phone comes in Black and White colour options. Vivo has embedded a 16MP selfie camera underneath the display. The brand says that it has increased the light transmittance near the part of the screen where the camera is integrated by six times, compared to the rest of the display. Vivo mentioned that it is relying on algorithmic optimisations to improve image quality.
In the camera department, the APEX 2020 sports a ‘gimbal’ 48MP rear camera. It promises to reduce blurring caused by shaky hands and improve the performance by 200 percent over OIS systems. The smartphone is said to have improved nighttime photography. Another camera feature on the APEX 2020 is ‘Continuous Optical Zoom’ with moving lens elements between a 5-7.5x magnification range. Vivo says that it is achieved by a 4-group lens combination and is the first smartphone with high-magnification continuous zoom.
Under the hood, the Vivo APEX 2020 is equipped with top-of-the-line hardware. The concept phone houses the flagship Snapdragon 865 processor coupled with 12GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage. Vivo hasn’t revealed the exact battery capacity of APEX 2020. Since there are no ports on the phone, it supports 60W wireless charging that is claimed to top up a 2,000mAh battery in 20 minutes. The Vivo APEX 2020 is also a 5G-enabled device.
The Vivo APEX 2020 is quite an ambitious and innovative smartphone. Although the concept phone may not make it to the market, it’s likely that some of the tech will show up in future smartphones that customers could actually buy.
