The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is the second Snapdragon 845-powered flagship phone for the year from Vivo. The Vivo NEX that was launched in June came with a bezel-less screen and pop-up selfie camera. The newly announced Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is an innovative smartphone that features two displays, triple rear cameras and 10GB of RAM.
Design and Display
Despite packing in dual screens, the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition measures only 8.1mm in thickness. The device weighs 199 grams. An aluminum frame is sandwiched between the front and rear glass. The phone is equipped with a 6.39 inch S-AMOLED screen in front, which features a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and full HD+ resolution of 2,330 x 1,080 pixels. A layer of 2.5D glass is placed on the display. According to Vivo, the NEX Dual Display Edition offers a screen-to-body ratio of 91.63 percent.
Flipping to the rear reveals the second screen of the phone which features thick bezels on the top and bottom. The rear-facing 5.49-inch Super AMOLED screen offers a 16:9 aspect ratio and full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Above the display are the three camera sensors accompanied by dual-tone LED flash, an RBG-lit Lunar Ring and an IR illuminator. The NEX brand name is etched on the bezel below the display.
Chipset, RAM and Storage
The Snapdragon 845 chipset accompanied by 10GB of RAM powers the NEX Dual Display Edition. The 3,500mAh battery present inside the device is equipped with 22.5W fast charging. The internal storage of the smartphone is 128GB. The handset lacks a microSD card slot.
Cameras and Other Features
The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition features a primary 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor with f/1.79 aperture. It is equipped with features like 4-axis OIS and dual pixel autofocus. It is assisted by an f/1.8 aperture 2-megapixel depth sensor. The third lens is an f/1.3 aperture Time of Flight (TOF) 3D camera for AI face recognition and AI beautification.
There is no selfie camera on the front of the phone. Instead, the second display functions as a viewfinder while capturing selfies. The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition runs Android 9 Pie which is overlaid with Vivo’s FunTouch OS 4.5 UI. The Jovi AI assistant comes preloaded on the device.
The face unlock feature of the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition can be used to unlock it from the rear. The AI face recognition is enabled by the ToF camera. Vivo says it can read 300,000 points on the face at a distance of up to 3 metres to accurately scan the face of the user. To unlock the device from the front, users can make use of the phone’s under-display fingerprint scanner.
The RBG-lit Lunar Ring houses two camera sensors and spills into the top portion of the rear display. It glows for notifications, and can be set to pulse while playing music on the phone. The Lunar Ring can also illuminate while playing games on the smartphone. The Lunar Ring has additional soft LEDs that can function as a selfie flash as well.
The connectivity features available on the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition include dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB OTG, USB Type-C, GPS and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Price and Availability
The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition carries a price tag of 4,998 Yuan (~Rs. 52,300) in China. The pre-orders of the smartphone have started in the home country through Vivo’s official online store. The handset can be availed in Blue and Red colors. It will be releasing in China on December 29th, with international availability starting next year.
