Vivo NEX, NEX Ultimate Officially Launched with SD845, Pop-Up Selfie Camera & 91% Screen Space

Vivo has unveiled the Vivo NEX and Vivo NEX Ultimate smartphones through an unveiled event in China today. The Vivo NEX is the commercial version of the Vivo APEX concept phone that was showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 tech trade show. The Vivo NEX duo are packed with some exciting features like highest screen-to-body ratio display, under-display fingerprint reader and pop-up selfie camera.

Vivo NEX and NEX Ultimate Variants

The Vivo NEX and NEX Ultimate phones share the same design and are packed with similar specs. The Vivo NEX is an inferior device than the NEX Ultimate variants that include flagship specs. The Vivo NEX phone features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, Snapdragon 710 chipset, 6 GB of RAM and an internal storage of 128 GB. The Vivo NEX Ultimate comes in two models that respectively feature 128 GB and 256 GB of internal storage. The NEX Ultimate variants are blessed with in-display fingerprint scanner and are powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset and 8 GB of RAM.

The Vivo X20 UD and X21 UD respectively feature first and second-generation in-display fingerprint scanner. The Vivo NEX Ultimate is fitted with 3rd generation under-screen fingerprint sensor that is not only 10 percent faster, but also 50 percent more accurate. The Vivo NEX has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.


The Vivo NEX Ultimate is equipped with CS43199 + SSM6322 audio chip whereas the Vivo NEX has AK4376A DAC Hi-Fi audio chip. The Ultimate models are equipped with High Power UE (HPUE) for better signal coverage even in areas with weaker network.

Internationally, the Vivo NEX featuring Snapdragon 710 SoC is known as Vivo NEX A. The 128 GB and 256 GB NEX Ultimate variants are internationally known as Vivo NEX and Vivo NEX S.

What’s mentioned above are the major differences between Vivo NEX variants. To talk about the identical features of the Vivo NEX and NEX Ultimate, we will be referring them as Vivo NEX in the rest of the article. The Vivo NEX features a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED screen that is dubbed as Ultra FullView Display by Vivo. The display is enabled with support of DCI-P3 color gamut.

In a bid to offer more screen space to the user, many smartphone manufacturers have launched phones with notch design. The Vivo NEX does not feature a notch screen, because of which it manages to produce a screen-to-body ratio of 91.24 percent. Except for the slightly thick bottom bezel, the other sides of the screen are surrounded very thin bezels. A speaker is fitted on the chin of the device. The display of the Vivo NEX produces FHD+ resolution of 2316 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. The Chinese manufacturer has tucked all the sensors under the display of the smartphone. Instead of an earpiece, the Chinese firm has used Screen SoundCasting Technology on Vivo NEX for sound output.

Another amazing feature of the Vivo NEX is that it has a pop-up selfie camera that remains hidden under the top bezel of the phone. It automatically pop-ups and retracts when the camera app is accessed. It is an 8-megapixel selfie snapper with f/2.0 aperture. The selfie snapper carries support for AI-powered Face Beauty. The smartphone makes a sound when the selfie camera rises and hides.


The vertical dual camera setup that lies on the posterior of the Vivo NEX includes an f/1.8 aperture 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor that has a pixel size of 1.4um. The primary sensor is also equipped with OIS. It is assisted by a 5-megapixel secondary sensor that has an aperture of f/2.4 aperture. It is the same dual camera setup that is available on the Vivo X21 UD smartphone. The dual camera system of the Vivo NEX is equipped with AI capabilities for scene identification, HDR, filters and photo composition.

The Vivo NEX is powered by 4,000mAh battery that is enabled with support for 22.5W fast charging through USB-C. It is preloaded with Android 8.1 Oreo that is overlaid with custom user interfaced called Energy UI that is driven by AI. The handset includes a dedicated button for activating Jovi Intelligent Voice Assistant. Through voice commands, Jovi can be used for launching apps and it is capable of image recognition, translation, scanning, shopping, encyclopedia and map reading.

The Vivo Game Engine is available on the Vivo NEX to deliver an immersive gaming experience through hardware and software optimization. Also, the handset is optimized to perform better while playing games built with Unreal Engine. For enhanced gaming experience, the 4×4 antenna scheme promotes improved signal reception when the handset is held in landscape mode for playing games. The smartphone is also equipped with zero-sensing heat dissipation system.Vivo-NEXThe company’s partnership with dtsX has allowed it include support for 7.1 channel 3D audio on the Vivo NEX smartphone. The connectivity features available on the Vivo NEX include dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5 LTE, GPS, GLONASS and 3.5mm audio jack.

Vivo NEX and NEX Ultimate Pricing and Availability

The Vivo NEX carries a pricing of 3,898 Yuan (Rs. 41,200). The 128 GB and 256 GB NEX Ultimate models are respectively priced at 4,498 Yuan (~Rs. 47,500) and 4,998 Yuan (~Rs. 52,775). The pre-orders of these phones will begin in China from June 13 and their shipments will start on June 23.  The NEX and NEX Ultimate phones can be availed in colors like Diamond Black and Ruby Red.
