WhatsApp to introduce animated stickers, improved group video calls, QR codes and more

WhatsApp is undeniably the most popular instant messaging platform in the world. The app reportedly has over 1.5 billion users in 180 countries, with 1 billion active daily users. The company has been pushing out several new features of late, most recently, by increasing the number of group call participants from four to eight.

Now, WhatsApp has announced several new features through an official blog post. The group call feature is being further improved to let users long-press and focus on a particular participant in full screen during an ongoing video call. Additionally, the app will also finally bring the Instagram Stories-like WhatsApp status feature to KaiOS-powered feature phones.

There have been talks of WhatsApp bringing Telegram-like animated stickers to its platform. Now, the company has announced that it will roll out animated sticker packs soon, which will be more expressive. WhatsApp has already rolled out dark mode to its mobile app and is now bringing the feature to its Web interface as well as the desktop app.

The group video calls in WhatsApp will now allow users to press and hold on a participant’s video to make it fullscreen and focus on them. The app will also get a video icon in groups that have eight or less participants to make it easier to start a group call with a single tap.

WhatsApp will also roll out a feature similar to Instagram’s Name Tag, which lets users share a customised tag with others to follow easily. WhatsApp will allow users to scan QR codes to add contacts, eliminating the need for the entire process of adding the contact to the phonebook.

Lastly, the WhatsApp 24 hours Status is coming to KaiOS-powered phones. This means users of features phones powered by KaiOS like JioPhone will now be able to post da isappearing status from their phones.

WhatsApp has announced that these features will roll out to users in coming weeks in the latest version of the app.
