- WhatsApp’s latest update allows users to enable disappearing messages by default
- It now offers new durations for disappearing messages
- These features are now available for Android and iOS users
WhatsApp disappearing messages feature can now be set as default. In November, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform added the disappearing messages feature for the first time. It allowed users to self-destruct messages after seven days. Apart from an option to enable disappearing messages by default, the latest update of WhatsApp also provides more control over disappearing messages through new duration options such as 24 hours and 90 days.
WhatsApp has been consistently improving privacy and security features with each update. In August, the company rolled out the ‘View Once’ feature, which let the recipients view a received photo or video only one time. Multi-device support and WhatsApp Payments are some of the features that were recently added to the app.
WhatsApp disappearing messages: what’s new?
Last month’s update that introduced the disappearing messages function required users to manually enable the feature for each new chat. However, the latest update lets users enable the disappearing messages feature on all new one-on-one chats by default.
As far as group chats are concerned, WhatsApp is now providing an option to turn on disappearing messages by default while creating a group chat. The new feature is optional for one-on-one chats as well as group chats and it does not change or delete any of the previous chats.
Until now, WhatsApp users were able to delete a chat automatically after 7 days. However, the new update provides multiple durations such as 24 hours or 90 days for deleting chats automatically. There is an Off option as well to turn off the disappearing messages feature. The new features are now available for both Android and iOS users.
For users who enable default disappearing messages, WhatsApp will show a message in the chats that will notify people that the feature is turned on and it will display the default timer duration after which the messages will be deleted on their own.
