As mentioned before, there are four text formatting options offered by WhatsApp to its users. Normally, users can long press on the text before sending, click on the ellipsis (three-dot icon) and select from the format options. However, the option doesn’t show up on some phones and that’s when you will have to manually insert characters to apple the desired text format. Below are the steps to do so.

WhatsApp font styles: bold

  1. Head to WhatsApp on your smartphone
  2. Open a chat you wish to send stylised message to
  3. Type your message in the box
  4. Add “*” before and after the message (example *Hi*)
  5. Click on send
  6. Your message should appear in bold

WhatsApp font styles: italics

  1. Head to WhatsApp on your smartphone
  2. Open a chat you wish to send stylised message to
  3. Type your message in the box
  4. Add “_” before and after the message (example _Hi_)
  5. Click on send
  6. Your message should appear in italics

WhatsApp font styles: strikethrough

  1. Head to WhatsApp on your smartphone
  2. Open a chat you wish to send stylised message to
  3. Type your message in the box
  4. Add “~” before and after the message (example ~Hi~)
  5. Click on send
  6. Your message should appear in strikethrough

  1. Head to WhatsApp on your smartphone
  2. Open a chat you wish to send stylised message to
  3. Type your message in the box
  4. Add ““`” before and after the message (example “`Hi“`)
  5. Click on send
  6. Your message should appear in monospaced font

Bear in mind, the above steps work for both WhatsApp web and mobile applications. You can use the same string of characters whether you are on a laptop or mobile to apply stylised WhatsApp font styles to your messages.
