WhatsApp is reportedly working on a chat history migration feature that will enable cross-platform data transfer. It was spotted by WABetaInfo, a platform that tests WhatsApp features in beta and shares information about them.
The upcoming feature will make it easier for users to switch between Android and iOS. WhatsApp already lets users backup their chats online however, there is no way to transfer chat history between the two platforms. The chat history migration feature will be a welcome move for users who switch between Android and iOS devices.
WhatsApp testing chat history migration between Android and iOS devices
WABetaInfo shared a screenshot testing the upcoming chat history migration feature. It displays a screen that notifies the user to update WhatsApp to the latest version in order to move chat history from iPhone to Android. The feature will also allow users to transfer chat history from Android to iPhone. The report adds that the app needs to be updated to the latest version available on the App Store or TestFlight in order to avoid any compatibility issues.
The chat history migration from Android to iOS devices and vice versa is quite difficult as both platforms use different cloud backup i.e Android uses Google Drive while iOS uses iCloud. There are third-party apps that help users move their chat history between two platforms, but WhatsApp says that it violates their Terms of Service.
WABetaInfo adds that the chat history migration is expected to be a part of WhatsApp’s multi-device support feature. The latter will reportedly allow users to access the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices.
According to the report, there is no exact timeline for when the chat history migration feature will be available. However, we can expect it to arrive in the coming months.
