WhatsApp Comes To KaiOS-Powered Feature Phones

In the world of smartphones, feature phones are still in demand today. The advent of devices like the JioPhone 2 and Nokia 8110 4G have further increased the traction of feature phones. The devices offer simplicity, long battery life and other helpful features at a low price tag.

KaiOS is a popular feature phone OS with basic functionality like apps, music playback, storage, and Google services support. The OS has been heavily invested in by Google. Now, KaiOS Technologies has announced that WhatsApp is now available on KaiOS-powered phones with at least 256GB RAM. This includes a total of seven KaiOS devices; the Cat B35, Doro 7060, JioPhone (Reliance Jio), JioPhone 2 (Reliance Jio), MTN Smart, Nokia 8110 (HMD Global), and the Orange Sanza. The app can now be downloaded from the KaiStore and is also confirmed to come preloaded on select phones starting Q3 2019. The KaiOS version of the app supports both calling and messaging complete with end-to-end encryption just like it does on Android and iOS. It’s worth noting that WhatsApp was made available on the Reliance JioPhone last year, followed by the Nokia 8110 in April. However, the app was available only to Indian users.

With the availability of WhatsApp on a wider number of feature phones, the app is set to gain a slew of new users.
