  • WhatsApp has received the nod from NPCI to expand its payments service
  • Instead of lifting the limit entirely, NPCI has given the approval to expand the service to 40 million users in India

WhatsApp had launched its UPI-based payment service in India in November last year, and it was allowed to onboard 20 million users. With the NPCI’s nod, the restriction on the user base has now been doubled to 40 million.

WhatsApp gets approval to expand its user base for payment service

WhatsApp Pay

WhatsApp Pay allows users to send and receive money within the app.

WhatsApp has 500 million monthly active users in India. The payment service will be rolled out to another 20 million users taking the total user base to 40 million. The report by Reuters states that the new cap would still hinder the company’s growth prospects since India is WhatsApp’s biggest market. The Meta-owned company had also requested to lift the entire cap on its payment service in the country.

It is still unclear when the new cap will come in to effect. Both WhatsApp and NPCI did not comment on the matter.

WhatsApp has been working on its payments service since 2018 and it was only launched last year due to various hurdles. The payments feature makes it easier for users to send and receive money from their contacts on the instant messaging platform. The digital payments space in India has been growing rapidly over the years and WhatsApp’s payment service competes against the likes of Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm in the country.
