The group membership approval function is currently under development for Android. It will be available for beta testers in the near future, however, there is no word on the exact release date. WABetaInfo has given us a sneak peak at the upcoming feature.

WhatsApp group membership approval feature in the works

As seen in the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, group admins can turn on the option to approve the joining requests of participants. The feature has to be toggled in group settings. When it is turned on or off, existing group members will be sent a quick alert to let them know of the change.

This means that users interested in joining the group by using a group invite link need to be manually approved by the group admin. The report adds that there will be a new section within the group info where admins can manage all the incoming requests everytime someone tries to enter the group via a shareable link.

Recently, WhatsApp introduced the ability to add up to 512 members in groups. Additionally, a shareable link allowed admins to share it with relevant users who could directly join the group. This also resulted in security vulnerability as anyone with the link could join and misuse it. With the group membership approval feature, admins can now manage groups better.

The feature is expected to roll out for stable versions of WhatsApp on Android and iOS in the near future.
