- WhatsApp has rolled out voice calling support for KaiOS devices
- Existing users need to update the app to the latest version
- Making voice call on WhatsApp requires an active connection to the internet
WhatsApp voice calling is now available on KaiOS powered feature phones. This means that phones running on KaiOS worldwide like Nokia feature phones as well as Jio Phones will get voice calling support.
WhatsApp debuted on Jio Phone in 2018 and later arrived on other KaiOS based devices in 2019. In a statement, WhatsApp COO said “Bringing WhatsApp voice calls to KaiOS-enabled devices helps us connect the world privately through a service that is simple, reliable and accessible to everyone – no matter what kind of mobile device they’re using,”
WhatsApp voice calling arrives on Jio Phone and KaiOS devices
WhatsApp says that it wants to support communities that are on lighter operating systems across the world. The Facebook-owned company has worked closely with KaiOS to develop the technology needed to communicate in a simple and cost-effective way.
Voice calling on WhatsApp works on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. Users will need to have active mobile data connectivity or WiFi to be able to make voice calls.
The new feature is available on WhatsApp version 2.2110.41 on KaiOS based phones, so users need to update to the latest version of the app. It’s worth noting that the feature phone should at least have 512MB of RAM. On existing devices, WhatsApp will send an update notification of the app which users will have to accept.
