Will Xperia XZs help Sony fight a losing battle in India?

If I’ve to point out one brand that hasn’t been doing well since the last couple of years or so (both locally and internationally), I’d list out many of them. Yes, I’ll be honest with you. Whenever I’m asked to recommend a good phone (of course there aren’t bad ones, right? Howdy, HTC?) these days, I just get caught up in a dilemma. As a result, I eventually run out of enough names to recall, and for a valid reason: brand presence. Even though there are numerous mobile brands already, I can’t think beyond popular ones that are offering good value for money phones. More often than not, it also applies the other way around. One such brand is Sony that despite providing a good set of hardware and features falling behind in the overcrowded smartphone market.

In spite of the on-going struggle, Sony announced four new smartphones — Xperia XZs, XZ Premium, XA1, and XA1 Ultra — at MWC earlier this year. Yesterday, Sony unveiled the Xperia XZs in India at the price of Rs 49,990. Even though it’s a successor to last year’s Xperia XZ, there are no significant upgrades. It still gets the same old 5.2-inch 1080p display and Snapdragon 820 processor. Wait, what? However, it’s thankfully got some minor improvements here and there.

The phone packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory that’s expandable up to 256GB. What’s more, it runs Android Nougat out of the box and embraces two SIM slots. As for the camera, it houses a 19-megapixel f/2.0 lens with LED flash, EIS, predictive and laser autofocus. It can also record 4K videos at 30 frames per second (fps). Up front consists of a 13-megapixel selfie camera.

The Xperia XZs measures 146 x 72 x 8.1 mm and weighs 161 g. It also gets a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which is standard for the Xperia lineup. In terms of connectivity, the phone supports 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C. It packs a 2900mAh battery with Qnovo’s adaptive charging technology.

Available in Ice Blue, Warm Silver and Black colours, the Xperia XZs will go on sale in India starting April 11th.
