The next-gen gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft are here. While Sony announced its PlayStation 5 back in June without a launch date or pricing, Microsoft has confirmed the availability of its upcoming Xbox for global as well as Indian markets. In addition, Microsoft has also announced India-specific pricing.
Much like Sony’s PlayStation 5, Microsoft is offering its next-gen console in two versions i.e. Xbox Series X with a disk drive and a digital-only Series S. The former packs powerful specifications while the latter is a cheaper alternative. Let’s take a look at both gaming consoles below.
Xbox Series X specifications and features
Beginning with the Xbox Series X, the device offers support for 8K resolution and frame rates up to 120fps. The device comes with 4K UHD Blu-ray disk drive support. Design-wise, the console looks similar to a CPU and can be used in both vertical and horizontal orientations. In terms of dimensions, the Series X measures 151 x 151 x 301mm and weighs 4.45kg.
Under the hood, the Xbox Series X houses an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.8GHz. It is paired with AMD RDNA 2 GPU that is claimed to deliver 12.15 teraflops GPU power, which is three times the GPU power of Series S. The Xbox Series X packs 16GB GDDR6 RAM and offers 1TB NVMe SSD storage. It also supports 1TB external storage via USB HDD.
Xbox Series S specifications and features
The Xbox Series S is an affordable option compared to Series X. It is also 60 percent smaller. The gaming console maxes out at 1440p resolution at 120fps. However, Microsoft says that it is capable of scaling games up to 4K with its built-in hardware scaler. The Series S is an all-digital console meaning that it doesn’t feature a disk drive.
The Xbox Series S is also powered by the same processor and GPU, but the latter’s processing power is limited at 4 teraflops. The gaming console also packs lower 10GB GDDR6 RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD storage. Both the Xbox Series X and Series S support hardware-accelerated features like raytracing, variable-rate shading and mesh shading.
Xbox Series X and Series S price in India
The Xbox Series X carries a price tag of Rs 49,990, while the Series S will retail at Rs 34,990. The gaming consoles will go up for pre-order starting September 22nd, with sales commencing from November 10th in India.
Along with the consoles, Microsoft is offering 24-months Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at $24.99 (~Rs 1,834) a month. Xbox has also partnered with EA Play for a free membership to Game Pass subscribers.
