Xiaomi to launch washing machines, fridges and water purifiers in India this year

On: March 2, 2019

After becoming the leader of India’s smartphone market, Xiaomi has decided to take on the home appliances segment next. Products like washing machines, refrigerators, water purifiers and even laptops can be expected from the brand this year. In 2018, the Chinese manufacturer launched its Mi TV range which appealed to budget-conscious Indian consumers. The smart television units are manufactured in India and the company now aims to conquer the home appliances segment. Xiaomi has been leading the smartphone market since 2017 and this expansion could make them stronger.

Speaking to LiveMint, Manu Kumar Jain, the Managing Director of Xiaomi India said, “This year we will probably enter big categories such as water purifiers, laptops, and washing machines. Additional launches will include two to three small categories as well.”

He further added, “We now have nearly 30% market share in smartphones, which was till now our fastest growing business. However, if we launch categories such as washing machines, fridges, and water purifiers, we can disproportionately grow that and capture a bigger market share.”

Xiaomi already has a large offline presence through Mi Home and partner stores, so the brand will be able to leverage this for home appliances as well.
