Xiaomi was recently in the news for a leaked poster doing the rounds, which displayed a chic Meitu-branded handset flaunting a triple camera flip module. It was speculated that this smartphone could be the comeback phone for Meitu. However, Xiaomi has now gone ahead and announced the launch of its brand new smartphone series called CC in collaboration with Meitu, and the leaked smartphone we saw earlier is expected to be the debut launch from the new brand. The Chinese smartphone maker took to China’s micro social networking platform Weibo to announce the new series.
A post by Xiaomi co-founder, Lei Jun on Weibo details the vision and the intention behind the new brand. Jun mentions that the Redmi series of smartphones have long been an integral part of Xiaomi and helped the brand in acquiring young users. Xiaomi then went on to implement a new strategy, where it segmented the market and focused on launching more niche products. The birth of Redmi as a separate brand was a part of this strategy and the CC series is the latest offspring of the same approach. Jun goes on to mention that the new Xiaomi CC smartphones are intended for the younger generation and for this purpose, the company has hired fine arts professionals for CC’s product team.
The post reveals that Xiaomi intends CC to be the flagship phone for the youth. Jun then goes on to emphasise how the younger generation love to capture pictures and share them with everyone on their social media. For this reason, the Xiaomi CC will come equipped with the innovations from a new initiative called “Xiaomi x Meitu AI Aesthetics Lab”. This initiative will be developing “advanced camera hardware and beauty technology.” To recap, the leaked poster from earlier showed a smartphone featuring a flip camera module with three cameras and dual-tone LED flash.
Lei Jun also hints towards the pricing of the upcoming smartphone series as he doen’t want to stereotype youth with cheap and affordable devices. Consequently, we can expect the phone to be a mid-range offering. We will know more about the Xiaomi-Meitu collab in the coming days, so stay tuned.
