Xiaomi counterfeit products scam in India: how to check if your Xiaomi device is original

Xiaomi has announced that counterfeit product worth Rs 33.3 lakhs have been seized in India. The company has a wide range of products across various categories like accessories, audio, lifestyle, and apparel, to name a few. It has also been the number one brand in India for three years now, so it comes as no surprise that there are counterfeit products in the market to cash in on the brand value.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that the brand seized counterfeit products in the country. Last year in December, Xiaomi revealed in a statement that it had filed a police complaint as part of the brand’s anti-counterfeit measures. The company officials with the help of local police officers seized fake Xiaomi products worth Rs 13 lakhs in Delhi. This time around, the brand has seized products in Bangalore and Chennai.

The smartphone maker has released a statement revealing that counterfeit products with an estimated worth of Rs 33.3 lakh have been seized through raids conducted in Bangalore and Chennai. These products were seized from four suppliers in Chennai and three prominent suppliers in Bangalore. Xiaomi revealed that products worth Rs 24.9 lakhs and 8.4 lakhs have been seized from Bangalore and Chennai, respectively.

Just like last year, Xiaomi filed a complaint with the local police station in both cities as part of its anti-counterfeit program. Following the complaint by the brand, the police officials carried out the raid in the months of October and November. The dealers were found to be managing this business for a while and have already sold multiple fake Xiaomi products. The counterfeit products include mobile cases, headphones, power banks, chargers, and earphones, among others.

How to identify fake Xiaomi products

For the benefit of its customers, Xiaomi has announced a set of instructions to easily identify counterfeit products, Below are all the steps listed by the brand.

  1. Xiaomi products like powerbanks and audio products come with security codes, which can be verified on the official website
  2. Authentic Xiaomi products have very different packaging, pictures of which can be checked on the official website
  3. Check for the original Mi India logo on the packaging before buying (original logo can be checked on the official website)
  4. Fitness products like Mi Smart Band and Mi Watch Revolve will be compatible with the Mi Fit app
  5. Fake cables are of inferior quality
