2019 seems to be the year of foldable smartphones. Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold at the start of the year, followed by the Huawei Mate X, which is yet to arrive in India. Xiaomi was quick to join the bandwagon, revealing a video showcasing a prototype of the device. According to a patent claim filed recently, the foldable smartphone might flaunt a penta-camera layout.
According to the patent published on November 8th, the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone will feature an outward-folding display. The device flaunts a pop-up camera module with five cameras that act as the primary or selfie setup depending on how the device is held. When unfolded, the left half of the device is thicker than the right. This module houses the basic hardware, including the battery and camera setup.
Even though Xiaomi has filed for a patent, it does not guarantee the final product resembling the current design. Xiaomi is yet to officially announce the new foldable smartphone. The company revealed the Mi MIX Alpha back in September 2019. The smartphone features a wraparound display surrounding the device. Xiaomi claims the MIX Alpha will be available in limited numbers in the future.
In related news, Xiaomi recently launched the Mi CC9 Pro that is available globally as the Mi Note 10, last week with a penta-camera setup at the rear and a single sensor at the front. Xiaomi may probably use the same setup on its upcoming foldable smartphone. Although a formal announcement on a tentative launch is awaited, Xiaomi is rumored to launch the device soon, to make the most of the current hype surrounding the foldable display technology.
